Slartucker, I remember you were trying to research the dragons' propensity for switching genders throughout the game trilogy. Have you found anything yet? :)
Arancaytar | Send Reply! --- <i>That is not dead which can eternal lie...</i> 19:32, 19 January 2006 (CST)
Gender table
Here's what I found:
Motrax Pyrog Sulfras Athron Khoth
Exile 1 m m m m f
Exile 2 m m f m/f m
Exile 3 m m f f m
Avernum 1 m m m/f f m
Avernum 2 m f f f m
Avernum 3 m m f f m

"m/f" indicates that both pronouns are used (sometimes by the same speaker!). Also, E/A1 sometimes refer to Pyrog as "it", but presumably that's just because he's evil. Finally, note that I have not checked BoE/BoA for the Za-Khazi Run (Khoth's in that, isn't he?) let alone any non-canon stuff.

Basically, it looks like Jeff decided to switch genders of Sulfras, Athron, and Khoth after Exile 1 but goofed some Exile 2 references, then goofed again in converting Exile 1 to Avernum 1, and overcompensated while converting to Avernum 2. So the E/A3 genders can safely be considered canon. The only real story significance is that Athron talks about his brood in Exile 2, and the game refers to him *in that whole dialogue* with male pronouns. So brooding (hmm, mayhap not the best verb here) is not restricted to females.

I did consider writing up an elaborate theory (if Athron impregnated him/herself it would explain his/her unwillingness to reveal his/her mate) but I think I'll save my energy for the rakshasi...

I've been diving through the text dumps for some more lore research and was struck again by how inconsistent the names are even in the same game:

* The game's narrator calls all dragons that you can encounter "he" (Motrax, Athron, Sulfras, and Pyrog's skeleton).
* Motrax calls both Athron and Sulfras "she".
* Sulfras calls Athron "he" and Khoth "she".
* Athron calls Sulfras "she" ("Her vengeance will be mighty!") and Khoth "he". ("Dishonorable Khoth! He now serves Garzahd!")
*24 August 2009: MediaWiki 1.16alpha failed to work with PHP 5.2.8, and the site was taken down temporarily.
They will still work, but automatically redirect to /wiki. Also, the logo has been briefly removed, pending the design of a new one. Please mail me if you would like to do that. :)
*4 May 2006: A new skin, using a blue, light-on-dark color scheme, is in the works. Try it out by switching it on in your preferences page (it will be default once the glitches are fixed, but I'm aiming for flexibility, so you can opt out). Also, MediaWiki 1.6.5 is out, but it's not quite worth the trouble.
* 20 April 2006: The software was upgraded to version 1.6.3. This is a major upgrade, so be sure to tell me if you see anything broken. Also, the first item in this list is removed. In the future, the announcements are truncated to 6 items.
* The site was moved on December 5th, 2005, to the new domain encyclopedia.ermarian.net. At the same time, the MediaWiki software was upgraded from 1.4.7 to 1.5.3. Images should once again be enabled. I hope.
* A site move is imminent, both to put a stop to the chronic downtimes and to finally gain image functionality again. I am checking out various hosting offers. The new domain will be ermarian.net
* The wiki was restored without permanent damage on November 8th, 2005. However, images are now altogether disabled. An update to Version 1.5 of the wiki is imminent.
* The wiki software got corrupted around September 16th, 2005
* The EEWiki (Encyclopedia Ermariana Wiki) was set up on August 22nd, 2005
Around 825 IE, she hatched a brood of dragons, her offspring with a very distant mate. Frustrated by the constant increase in human activity in the caves, Athron eventually moved to the surface in search of solitude. She lived in the distant northwest corner of the Midori Province with her siblings Sulfras and Khoth.

Although Athron despised humans, she helped the agents of Unspecified Services to end the Plagues by providing them with a magical bar of metal out of her own trove which would be crafted by ritual into the Beastslayer Blade. The dragons considered the alien beasts a threat to their own safety, and wished them destroyed.
Unlike her siblings, whom the Empire had enslaved during the Empire-Avernum War, Athron had no desire to seek vengeance against the Empire, and wished only to be left alone.
Jerry, a lot of the stuff you added has more to do with other subjects (like the Tower of Magi or Erika Redmark or the Five) than Solberg himself, and is already covered there. Basic Exile history can't really go in every entry. Also, try not to make stuff up (like dates), it's very easy to slip away from the canon.

We need to write in Wiki format, using brackets to indicate links and so on -- see Help:Editing for more on that. And please make sure you hit "Show preview" before you save your changes -- your formatting got really messed up and made most of the page unreadable.
I'm still writing about it.
I was going to continue to write as there is so much I could write. I know some of the other things are somewhat written elsewhere, but I was pretty much trying for a life story of sorts. On the Spiderweb forums, my user name is Archmage Solberg. I kinda got too interested in this character.

Forgot something.
About the dates, I was just using dates found from other places within the encyclopedia (except for Solberg's birthdate).

::Solberg is definitely a great character to be interested in.
::A life story sounds like a good idea, but remember to keep it focused on Solberg. I've italicized part of your story, above. This entire italicized section describes events that Solberg was involved in, but it doesn't actually talk about Solberg at all. The paragraphs about Patrick and Erika leaving, in particular, don't have much to do with him. == Life Extension ==

Well both Rone and Solberg are said in A4 to have extended their life magically. I know I might 'embelish' a bit, but what does it hurt. We know Rone and Solberg did it, I'm pretty sure X has done it and why not Erika the strongest of all.
Arch-Mage Solberg 12:05, 13 December 2006 (PST)

::What does it hurt? Are you kidding? This is an encyclopedia. It is supposed to be a reliable and precise source of information from game canon. Reasonable extrapolation -- connecting the dots -- is one thing, but embellishing outside of those lines has no place at EE. --- Slarty 21:27, 13 December 2006 (PST)
Changes in last edit
Here are the things I did from the last edit.
* Removed Prolongation
* Changed spelling of Bloran to Bhoralon
* Changed spelling of City Shades to Black Shades
* Moved around some text to better fit the story
* Fixed some link issues

I'm sorry that I always mess up. I will try to do better from now on. Arch-Mage Solberg 10:14, 14 December 2006 (PST)

::Actually, this information is easily available using the "history" (on individual entries) and "diff" (on recent changes) features. EE does it automatically for you.

::A-M S, we certainly appreciate your positive attitude and your help. You have been making some useful contributions, like the Black Shade summaries. Just be careful not to make assumptions about things -- non-canon stuff will be edited mercilessly! Also, changes to the structure of the encyclopedia (such as a new template) really need to be proposed on a talk page before being implemented. (Now that this one is here, we may as well discuss it before doing anything about it, but usually it's useful to discuss before implementing.) --- Slarty 21:18, 14 December 2006 (PST)

:::I just figured it would be, if not usefull, make the pages more sophisticated. I will discuss before ANY major changes.Arch-Mage Solberg 08:12, 15 December 2006 (PST)
Age in A3RW
Solberg's introduction in A3RW has a very odd description of his age:

> You meet an aging mage in flowing violet robes. Although he is only in his forties, he is aged well beyond his years.

This appears to be saying that rather than Solberg magically keeping himself younger than his chronological age, he appears older than he is.

Needless to say, Solberg being in his forties in Avernum 3 (833) contradicts basically everything about our timeline.

* It puts his birthyear between 784 (49) and 793 (40), decades after the Five are supposed to have been exiled in 776.
* It makes him 27-37 years old in Avernum 1 (817), as a powerful archmage who has already spent years founding Avernum, building the Tower of Magi, then building his own tower.

I'm not sure what to make of this retcon. Even positing that he got exiled as a teenager, it suggests Avernum couldn't possibly have been founded before 804-814, with most settlements being brand-new at the time you explore them in 817 in Avernum 1. -- Arancaytar | Send Reply! --- <i>That is not dead which can eternal lie...</i>

Aided by a certain ritual, the Vahnatai have the ability - after death - to let their spirit coalesce and bring it into physical form. The soul takes the shape of a deep blue crystal that is between two and three feet long and weighs around 300 stones. Only the wisest and most powerful of the Vahnatai leaders receive this honor. Vahnatai who turn themselves into crystal souls without being granted permission - and those living Vahnatai that aid them - are ostracized from society and forced to live in exile.

Vahnatai who have become crystal souls append the title Bok to their name, which is Novah for 'Soul' or 'Great Leader'.

Vahnatai who will become crystal souls after death also bear this title, but since this honor is usually granted only shortly before death, the title Bok is very rarely borne by living Vahnatai.

In their new form, crystal souls enjoy vastly enhanced mental and spiritual faculties. They have a near perfect memory and supreme powers of concentration and reasoning. Their magical powers - great for a Vahnatai - become immense. However, they are not immune to mental harm - in some ways, they are even more sensitive than corporeal Vahnatai.

Either through a mistake made during the ritual, or through cruelties inflicted upon the soul, the soul may fracture and become unstable or even insane. The most dangerous of these necessarily are exiled - there was one such soul in the Black Waters between Vahnatai lands and Exile. Other fractured souls may continue to live among the Vahnatai, as Vyvnas-Bok did.

Crystal souls can communicate with Vahnatai and humans by projecting their thoughts into their minds. Communicating with humans is painful for both parties, so it is rare that a crystal soul will choose to speak with a human unless they have information of great importance.

Crystal souls are the Vahnatai's most important and influential advisors. They spend their days focusing on the further pursuit of knowledge and contemplating the current problems facing their people. As such, they are revered by all Vahnatai, and harming a crystal soul is unthinkable. Even when Gaddika betrayed three crystal souls to the Empire, he did not harm them and tried to make the Empire agree as well.
Many caves are mined for valuable metals and crystals, and there are large expanses of terrain used as mushroom farms.

Natural Hazards
Living in the caves for an extended period of time when not used to it is known to lead to a malady involving incontinence, nausea, light-headedness, and headaches. Upon returning to the surface, it goes away in less than two weeks. Also, there are still many untamed areas of the caves, where monsters such as goblins, Nephilim, chitrachs, cave slimes, giant lizards, magical worms, and more lurk.

Population
Government
Country Name
Conventional Long Form: The Kingdom of Avernum

Government Type
Constitutional Monarchy

Government Structure
Originally, there were three major branches of government: the military, controlled by the king, the magi, controlled by the Triad, and the city governments, represented by the Council. The Council consisted of the mayors of the six largest cities in Avernum — Silvar, Formello, Cotra, Almaria, Blosk, and Dharmon.

This system reflected the struggle for the colonization of Exile, when Micah led the warriors and the Five led the mages. Each of these branches was theoretically subordinate to the crown. In reality, the Council was stubborn and controlling, and the magi were too powerful to question.

When the Empire-Avernum War began, power rapidly centralized under King Micah. The military swelled as a result of the war; also, after Linda's summoning of Adze and Erika's assassination of Hawthorne III, trust in the mages had eroded.

When the much-maligned Chevyn took the throne, the Council overrode his powers and took control of Avernum. Upon Starrus's ascent to the throne, Starrus and his advisor, Houghton, abolished the Council and the Triad. Recently, public opinion has leaned towards reinstating the Council.

Administrative Divisions
*Northeastern Exile
*Eastern Gallery
*Honeycomb
*Great Cave
*Upper Avernum
*The Abyss
*Provincial Avernum

Leader
King Starrus

Capital
The Castle, in the Great Cave

Flag
A golden, eight-spoked sun on a field of blue.

Military
Ranks
Ranks in the Avernite army include Private, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and Commander. The latter two tend to be the ranks of the ranking officer in charge of a fort or a city guard. However, a captain of the city guard does not outrank a lieutenant of the army of Avernum.

History
Discovery
Hawthorne I was Emperor when the land of Exile was discovered. His court mages discovered the system of caves beneath the surface, and he sent down an exploratory expedition, aptly named the First Expedition. The expedition was led by the warrior Karzoth, and was slaughtered "to a man and a woman." Hawthorne concluded that the caverns were not useful, and they were ignored until 767 IE, when Hawthorne II began to send people — first criminals, later all sorts of people — there as punishment.

The First Exiles
The first people to be Exiled were helpless in the dark, unforgiving caverns. It was not until a young warrior named Micah united them and forced them to work together that they began to live and survive. They only had the resources to defend one settlement, the predecessor to Fort Avernum, but did so feraciously. Still, it was only a matter of time before they were overwhelmed by the enemies lurking in the caves.

Banishing of the Archmagi
After Hawthorne I's death, his son, Hawthorne II, came to power. He began to send down to Exile violent and dangerous criminals of the foulest sort, instead of executing them. Then, in 776 IE, there was a power struggle among the mages, and the faction of the unscrupulous mage Garzahd emerged victorious, appointing him advisor to Hawthorne II. Hawthorne II banished the losing mages to Exile, including Erika, Rone, Solberg, Aimee, Linda, and Patrick.

A Society Forms
Joining with Micah, they established the Kingdom of Avernum in 777 IE and began to fight the demons and Slithzerikai that threatened them. They created cavewood trees, created hardy and edible mushrooms, built more cities, learned to fight, and they took over the caves. Erika used her considerable magical skills to teleport her spellbooks down to the caves and began teaching students with Patrick. In 779 IE, the archmagi and their apprentices were able to stage an assault on the demon lord Grah-Hoth in his fortress of Akhronath. They captured him in a bottle and imprisoned him in Skarragath, with the lich-ified Prince Hrothar, who had fallen in the battle, to watch over and guard him.

Avernum Asserts Itself
When Hawthorne II died and Hawthorne III came to power, Garzahd remained his advisor. Hawthorne III saw the portal to Exile as the answers to all of society's troubles. All the misfits, antisocials, petty lawbreakers, and more were sent down to Exile. And this proved to be his undoing.

In 817 IE, Avernum's agents infiltrated the Empire, assisted by Erika, and assassinated Hawthorne III in his own throne room. In 823, the Kingdom, with the help of the Vahnatai, defeated the punitive expedition the Empire launched in response. In 833, contact with the Empire was re-established and peace terms were signed.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't recall any of the games mentioning 'The Five' specifically. A list of names is always used, and even then not one person names all five people. Jerry bush forgot to sign.

Aimee vs. Linda
I think we had this discussion a long time ago... anyway, the fact is that there is contradicting evidence in the games as to who the fifth exilee was. The early games refer to Aimee among the five, while A4 (and maybe soem earlier Avernums? I don't remember) seems to have inconsistently retconned Linda into the early cave magic. However, some of those references -- praticularly the one to her as part of the Akhronath assault -- sound like goofs.

IMHO, there is a large mass of situational evidence on Aimee's side. Given Aimee's reclusiveness and her lack of eminently practical or powerful magic, it makes no sense that Erika AND Patrick AND Rone AND Solberg would be so close to her, and would talk about her as they do, without her having been part of the Five. There are also numerous statements like "then Linda came to the Tower"... if Linda had been one of the Five, those statements would make little sense, given that she would have been involved in the Tower's creation and would presumably have lived there since the beginning. And if Linda really was part of the assault on Akhronath, why is it that NOBODY -- not her, not Grah-Hoth, not Kelner, no one -- ever comments on that?

IMHO, it's safe to say that Aimee was in the Five and Linda was not. At any rate I think it's a mistake to state that Linda was a member; the evidence is too sketchy.
--- Slarty 12:13, 12 September 2006 (CDT)
::This is comment I used (talking to Micah in Av1), along with the list of the Five in Exile III: "An army of warriors and mages, led by Rone, the Royal magician, Linda, Solberg, and most powerful of all, the incantatrix Erika. They, their apprentices, and our finest warriors did battle with the demons. We won, and imprisoned Grah-Hoth." --Drakey 12:46, 12 September 2006 (CDT)
:::Just a question: If Jerry was right in saying the Five are never mentioned in that form in the game (no time to check the dumps), then how did we decide that there were five magi, rather than six (including both Linda and Aimee)? Disregard this if the game did say there were five wizards.

:::Does anyone else feel reminded of the "Five Wizards" question in Middle-earth? Arancaytar | Send Reply! --- <i>That is not dead which can eternal lie...</i> 04:26, 14 September 2006 (CDT)

::That quote is the one I was talking about. If you look up the same line in E1, Linda isn't mentioned. So at the very least it's an E/A conflict. When I finally get a computer again in about a week, I'll look up the other relevant lines. --Slarty 09:29, 14 September 2006 (CDT)
:::From Exile III, a book called The History of Exile: "Among these were several powerful mages, all of whom were at the losing end of a political struggle. These were Solberg and Patrick, Rone and Linda. And, most importantly, Erika. They imprisoned the demon Grah-Hoth who ruled the caverns, and formed a nation, which they called Exile as a constant reminder that this was not our true home." --Drakey 09:39, 14 September 2006 (CDT)

More on conflicting information
With two exceptions, there were no changes made between Exile and Avernum regarding any of this stuff. However, there were changes made between Exile 1 and 2, and Exile 3, which were preserved in the Avernum line. Inconsistent retconning to say the least. Data points:

* Exile/Avernum 1
**Rone: "We raided Akhronath, his now ruined fort, to the east. I, Patrick, and Erika trapped him is a powerful bottle of our own making..."
**Rone's journal: "In one of the drawers of the desk, you find a leather-bound journal, filled with cramped, scratchy writing. You soon determine that it is the incomplete memoirs of one Rone the wizard. He was cast into Exile along with two other mages, Erika Redmark and Patrick Padraig, after they were at the wrong end of a political struggle in the Mages Guild... Of greatest interest is the account of their defeat of the Demon Chieftain Grah-Hoth. They, with help of a large band of warriors and a small cadre of mage apprentices, stormed his fort..."
**Everyone involved in the assault on Akhronath talks about it. Linda does not talk about it.

* Exile/Avernum 2
**Solberg: "You see, all the most powerful mages in Avernum, me and Erika and Aimee and Patrick, we were colleagues on the surface world. Us, and Garzahd... He envied us our skill. He thought us a challenge to his aspirations. So he spent his time, he and Hawthorne, getting each of us exiled one after another."

* Exile/Avernum 3
**ON THE HISTORY OF EXILE (Book): "Misfits and magical creatures alike were sent through a one way teleporter into Exile. Among these were several powerful mages, all of whom were at the losing end of a political struggle. These were Solberg and Patrick, Rone and Linda. And, most importantly, Erika. They imprisoned the demon Grah-Hoth who ruled the caverns..."

* Avernum 1 only (no Exile 1 counterpart)
**Micah: "An army of warriors and mages, led by Rone, the Royal magician, Linda, Solberg, and most powerful of all, the incantatrix Erika. They, their apprentices, and our finest warriors did battle with the demons. We won, and imprisoned Grah-Hoth."
**Lich Lord (counterpart to Prince Hrothar): "Solberg and Erika Redmark and Patrick and Linda were the greatest of us. They fight on. I stay here, watching our prisoner..."

* Avernum 4
**Description: "And that is why, even today, after years of renovations and expansions, the Castle still looks more like it was grown than built. Wizards like Solberg and Linda shaped the Castle out of living rock."
**The Wars of Avernum (Book Description): "It was then that the Archmagi Erika, Solberg, Patrick, and others fought the demonic forces of Grah-Hoth, purging them from the tunnels and winning a place to live and grow in peace."

Given all this, I think the simplest way to maintain integrity is to go with the following version of events. Rone, Patrick, and Erika were exiled together (Rone) but other mages, namely Solberg, Linda, and Aimee, were exiled one by one in some order (Solberg). All of those mages were exiled before the assault on Akhronath. Rone, Patrick, and Erika led the assault (Rone). Solberg had an important role as well (A4 book, also since he already would have been a member of the Triad), and so did Linda (E/A3 book, Micah), but to a lesser degree (lack of discussion of her role by Linda, Rone, or anyone else). Presumably, Aimee was on scrying duty. 'X' was not an apprentice like Silverio, but was a later exile.

We are trapped in a maze of our own devising, here; the real problem is that this idea of "the Five" is completely fabricated! References to the boons and leadership of Solberg, Erika, Patrick, and Rone in the early days abound, but there are none about Linda, aside from very inconsistent retcons about the Akhronath assault.

Given that 18 articles link to the Five, and most of them have unlinked references that would also need to be edited, my suggestion is leave the title as is, call it an artifact of scholarship, and simply explain in the article that there were basically Four, but Linda and Aimee are sometimes thrown in.

Oof.

The political struggle that left Garzahd as Hawthorne's Grand Vizier (or equivalent) banished three members:

* Rone "the Wizard"
* Patrick Padraig
* Erika Redmark

(Source: A book in A1, the memoirs of Rone the Wizard.)

These same three are named in the same source as the mages (and implicitly the only fully trained ones) who led the army to defeat Grah-Hoth. In the source, they are accompanied by "a small cadre of mage apprentices".

However, King Micah says in A1:

:"An army of warriors and mages, led by Rone, the Royal magician, Linda, Solberg, and most powerful of all, the incantatrix Erika. They, their apprentices, and our finest warriors did battle with the demons. We won, and imprisoned Grah-Hoth."

My interpretation is that this is an inconsistency (because while Linda and Solberg being apprentices could work, they would not be named as leaders). Thus, my interpretation: Rone's wrong or biased. We know he's close with Patrick and Erika through the political thing, and he might have emphasized his and his friends' role in the demon war. Jeff has a history of including inaccurate/biased sources in his games without clearly identifying them as such (see Glowing Fungi). Note, however, that Micah has it wrong too, because he leaves out Patrick (who is mentioned as a sage like Aimee elsewhere, which makes me wonder just what he was doing among the battle mages).

(Oh. I just realized what "You forgot Patrick" reminded me of. :P )

A golem in A1 (whose name I'm not sure about) states:

:Those still among the living. Solberg and Erika Redmark and Patrick and Linda were the greatest of us. They fight on. I stay here, watching our prisoner.

No clue why he omits Rone - rumors of his death are greatly exaggerated.

In A2, Solberg says:

:"You see, all the most powerful mages in Avernum, me and Erika and Aimee and Patrick, we were colleagues on the surface world. Us, and Garzahd."

Note that - contrary to what Rone said above - Solberg considers himself part of the political struggle. He, on the other hand, leaves out Rone. Presumably, they didn't much like each other. Solberg, in turn, is known to have a grudge against Linda, which means he might have deliberately left her out too.

(Interestingly, there's a mage named Enla in Motrax's Cave in Grah-Hoth, who was also exiled by Garzahd: "Yes, before I was exiled, I knew him. He frightened me. He also wanted me. When I refused him, I found out how much power he had. The political kind. I ended up here. I hate him.")

---

So... Rone, Patrick, Solberg, Erika, Aimee and Linda, all banished to the caves. Erika was clearly their leader - everybody agrees on that. Patrick must have been a close buddy and popular, because he also is listed in all accounts.

However, we seem to have three groups who basically ignore each other: Rone leaves out Solberg, Aimee and Linda. Solberg leaves out Rone and Linda. Linda and Aimee never mention their struggle against Garzahd, so we don't have their perspective. What is definite is that Aimee was never part of the demon war.
Reply
The "golem" quote is attributed (correctly) earlier on this talk page -- it's from the Lich Lord known in Exile as Prince Hrothar.

Solberg mentions that the wizards were exiled "one after another" -- not all at once. Rone's memoirs just mention that he, Patrick and Erika were exiled together (presumably the first three wizards to be exiled). His other comment only mentions the three of them presumably because only the three of them cast the sealing spell itself; it's not a general comment about the assault.

As for Solberg, he only makes one comment, and he was rattling off a list; the simplest explanation is that he wasn't attempting to be exhaustive. A Solberg-Rone feud is not something that would go unmentioned; in this case, total lack of evidence is disproof.

Exile 1 makes it pretty clear that Linda didn't show up until after everyone else. Exile 3 pretty much retcons her into the original banishment and demon war, etc. As far as The Five are concerned I stand by the summary in my last three paragraphs above.
X
In Avernum 6, X claims to have been part of the group (naming Erika, Solberg, Rone and Patrick as the other four, but leaving out Aimee and Linda). This is interesting because it doesn't appear to have come up in any of the other sources referenced on this discussion page.

Screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/jIgNyFf.png

"Mighty wizard. On surface. Power struggle. Was on side that lost. With lost Erika. With old Solberg. With lost Patrick and Rone. Sent to underworld."

(Note that X may in this case be an unreliable narrator by design, because he is old enough to plausibly misremember his own arrival in Avernum, and also to have no living contemporaries - besides Solberg - to call him out on a lie.)

The most powerful magi to be exiled during Hawthorne II's reign. There is some ambiguity about which of Avernum's historical archmages were part of the group: Erika Redmark, Patrick, Rone, and Solberg are confirmed to have been among them. Various contradictory sources include Aimee, Linda or X as the fifth member, but all agree that their original number was five.

The Five were exiled during a power struggle among the mages during Hawthorne II's time as Emperor. They struggled against Garzahd and a group of his students for control of the Empire's magical policy. They lost, and Garzahd became Hawthorne II's closest advisor. He urged the Emperor to Exile these dangerous mages, which he did. Before they were Exiled, Garzahd placed a powerful curse on their leader, Erika Redmark (see Banishing of the Archmagi). Erika, Patrick, and Rone were exiled together, followed shortly by the individual exiles of Aimee, Solberg, Linda and X.

The Five made it their goal to make Exile a habitable place and are credited with the invention of quick-growing mushrooms, cavewood trees, and other important advances that enabled the exiles to survive where the First Expedition could not. The Five also established the Tower of Magi and served as some of the first members of the Triad. The Five led the fight to imprison Grah-Hoth in Skarragath, beat back Sss-Thoss and his demon-worshipping sliths, and helped Micah become King. (Aimee and Linda, though present and working to aid Avernum, played relatively small roles in these events.)

At Present Day, only Solberg and Rone are still known to be alive. Aimee's whereabouts are unknown.

Arancaytar: Fixed some writing

Alchemical ingredients are used by alchemists and sages across Ermarian to create potions for various purposes. Alchemical ingredients should be distinguished from magical reagents such as sapphires and smoky crystals.

Generally speaking, there is more than one way to concoct the same potion. Which ingredients will work, and what proportion of each is necessary, depends in some part on the condition of the ingredients, as well as local climate, and so on. For this reason, some alchemists classify herbs and other potion ingredients into several categories based on their general alchemical use.

Healing Herbs
Comfrey Root
Comfrey root has properties that accelerate healing. The plant is ground up and mixed with cold water or plant resin. The result is a salve which is applied topically, as it is toxic when ingested. Even though this plant is not rare, it can only be harvested in small quantities which makes the product pricey. Alchemists generally guard their sources as closely kept secrets, as overharvesting the root will destroy it.

Glowing Nettle
It is not known what makes some nettle plants absorb magical energy from the earth, but we are lucky they do. The strange, bright sheen on the leaves marks such plants. They can grow anywhere, even underground. However, the very same plant growing underground doesn't look like the same as it does on surface, but is more pale and grows weaker, instead.

Ember Flowers
Ember flowers are beautiful, sweet-smelling orange or yellow flowers. They have powerful healing properties that make them the essential component in the strongest healing potions and in resurrection balm. They are extremely rare.

Spiritual Herbs
Holly
This thorny green plant with the red berries is renowned for its usefulness in naturalistic rituals and alchemy. It is highly poisonous, and yet, in small quantities and properly treated, can make curing potions as well.

Crypt Shrooms
A rare variety of mushroom used in some poison and energy potions. Studied by Cochran of the Tower of Magi.

Asptongue Mold
A rare, dangerous mold, used in the creation of the most powerful poisons.

Energetic Herbs
Wormgrass
Wormgrass is twisted, wicked-looking, and defends itself with razor sharp edges. The youngest, freshest, sharpest blades are valuable in alchemy.

Unique Herbs
Toadstools
One of many poisonous varieties of mushroom. Toadstools are scattered throughout the land, which contributes to their diversity.

One extremely rare species of toadstool is the Borgia toadstool. It is native to the lower caves.

Graymold
Graymold is a sweet smelling, slimy, dark gray mold. Because of its scarcity and ability to cure almost any illness or injury, it is constantly in demand by healers and alchemists. It is best known for its use in graymold salve, though it is also used in other powerful potions. It is usually only found underground, but has been known to appear in isolated crags on the surface.

Mandrake
Since the earliest dawning of magical power, mandrake root has been the key ingredient of the most powerful rituals. In addition to containing much energy waiting to be unleashed, proper treatment can turn mandrake into a vicious poison.

Animal Part Ingredients
Fangs
Fangs and glands from asps, spiders, and even drakes are sometimes used in the creation of poisons. Intact sets are hard to come by, as most venom sacs rupture soon after a creature dies. Fangs from especially strong, magical creatures, such as spider queens and drake lords, are particularly valuable.

Otiose Reagents
Black-spotted Sponge Moss
One of the rarer naturally occuring ingredients, the sponge moss hasn't found any use in modern alchemy.

ooc

The Arena canon is the collection of assertions and predictions made by the formidable record of the Arena.

The Worldribbon
The Worldribbon is a great and confusing thing linking, at the very least, Ermarian, Earth, New Cradle, and the Cyrath homeworld in space and time.

The Cyrath
The Cyrath are a race of blue-green humanoids extremely and inexplicably similar to the Ermarian hominids. They are distinguished by an advanced level of telepathy, a third eyeball, and a subtle but inescapable compulsion to fly. This compulsion is not apparently cultural, either; even after major cataclysms, Cyrath technology has continuously aspired to the skies.

In the Arena timeline, they are consistent rival for the people of Ermarian, and often presented themselves as a rising menace, although on more than one occasion have been allies or mercenaries for Ermarian factions.

Cataclysms
Civilization-destroying events occurred fairly frequently throughout the time chronicled in the Arena canon. Two in particular stand out:

The Sundering of Aizo: Aizo, once the largest continent, was almost completely destroyed, leaving only a comparatively small remnant in the southern hemisphere. This was associated with the sudden rise of Doston from the sea and a global climactic catastrophe.

This Cataclysm destroyed the Empire and the civilization associated with it, although a substantial enough remnant remained to participate in the politics of the Arena for many years.

The Divine Flame: A major apocalyptic cult, after essentially overrunning the southern part of Doston, wound up obliterating the major cities of Aizo - absolutely annhilating any native culture and leaving a nigh-on uninhabited environment for Aixo to arise - and crashing a death satellite into the planet, causing global chaos and the reversal of human civilization.

Each cataclysm is set hundreds, if not thousands, of years from the present day.

Geography
In the Arena canon, there exist first four, then five continents: in the western and northern hemispheres Doston; in the southern and western hemisphere Aizo/Aixo; in the northern and eastern hemispheres Pralgad and Valorim, linked by landbridge; and in the rough center in both latitude and longitude Vantanas.

Astronomy
Ermarian orbits about Alxus, being the fourth planet to orbit the same; it possesses one moon of Earth-like proportions. It is linked by the mysterious worldribbon to Earth, Rath, New Cradle, and Sextus.

Fagots
Noteworthy fagots from the Arena canon include Imban, Thuryl, and Alec.
A pattern is beginning to emerge.

As I explained on my blog, the Ermarian Network has moved to a new server, which required an upgrade to PHP 5.3.3. Unfortunately, MediaWiki is not fully compatible with PHP 5.3.3, even the cutting-edge alpha version used here.

I had to introduce two separate workarounds to the MediaWiki code to make it editable again, but now it works once more. (See you next year.)

20 September 2009
It's been a while since I wrote an update, since the site has had no major glitches in the past year and a half (good), and also since the site hasn't occupied much of my (or really anyone's) attention for a long time (bad). That I'm writing an update now obviously means something went wrong again:

While continuously updating the MediaWiki subversion trunk, eventually (that is, about August 20 or so) MediaWiki started requiring PHP 5.2.9 or above. This was bad because I had PHP 5.2.8. It claimed that a libxml error in earlier versions didn't allow their database update script to run, and I didn't dare run the site on a non-updated database. Remembering my challenge in installing 5.2.8 last time (it was awful; I did it around New Year's and didn't get it working until a week later), I shied away from installing 5.2.10 then, and instead suspended the site.

Now I have some free time, and decided to install PHP 5.2.11 (released three days ago). Astonishingly, it turns out that almost all of the extensions I slapped on last time (ming, tidy, bzip2, etc.) are completely unnecessary because I never use them, and without them, PHP can be installed very, very easily. I've even managed to get PDO to work (usually the most difficult part). So here we go, MediaWiki 1.16alpha on PHP 5.2.11. EE is teh back.
MediaWiki was updated to stable branch 1.11 today. A full backup of files and database was made before, but no problems have occurred.

However, I have had to disable the PDF-generating extension, which was already ancient and unfortunately not compatible with this latest version. I will try to find a replacement soon. Meanwhile, for those who often save articles as PDF files, I recommend a utility named PrimoPDF. This is a printer driver that prints PDF files, much like Acrobat Distiller but ad-supported.
You may also notice that I took the opportunity to bring back the visitor counters below.
MediaWiki was updated to the development trunk today. For some applications, this would be ill-advised on a production version, but I'm ready to trust the version if Wikipedia runs it on their own site. Also, if the switch from 1.8 to 1.10 confused you for a moment as it did me, keep in mind that 1.10 is not "one point one zero", but "one point ten", which follows 1.9.
Big update.

First: The site moved to a new server on Monday. As of today, the site move is complete and the site works again for all people whose DNS points them to the correct server. The site is now hosted on DreamHost, who I'm already liking a lot better than the other guys.

Second: The MediaWiki was updated to version 1.7.1. Since I now have PHP5, I was able to upgrade the software to the latest version, the result of which you see here.

Third: Unlike earlier upgrades (in fact, only for the second time ever), I completely reinstalled the software. This is the reason some things do not look like you are used to. Some examples:

* The favicon (the yellow "E" in the address bar is gone, pending a redesign
* The logo has been replaced by the funny MediaWiki flower and the helpful text message. Also pending new logo.
* The dark blue skin is gone. Will be reincluded, but after two people disagreed, it will not be the default anymore.
* The Googleads and visitor counter are gone.
* The skin hasn't been fixed for XHTML-validity (in fact, I haven't checked - perhaps 1.7.1 has an XHTML-valid skin by default).

Fourth: I figured out how to fiddle with the navigation bar you see in the left side of the page. A few obsolete links have been removed and a link box for the Encyclopedia (forums and irc) has been added. There is also a link box for Ermarian-related pages, but I've only included a few because they would clutter up the page. The search box should be as high up as possible.
A site move is imminent now. The domain is up for renewal in two months, and I will register with Dreamhost in about 2 weeks. The cost of maintaining ermarian.net will (for the next two years) decrease from 8$ a month to 3$ a month, and MediaWiki will be upgraded to v1.7 soon after that.

The transition will be smoothed as much as possible, but it is likely the site will be unavailable for about a week.
The Encyclopedia should be updated to version 1.7.1 of MediaWiki, but unexpected problems delay this. Namely, my host refuses to install PHP 5 (required since 1.7.0) unless I buy a virtual private server at several times the price.

Fortunately, the hosting package is up for renewal in a couple of months, meaning that I have plenty of time to look around for a new host and organize a domain transfer. Maybe I'll even stop using "one-stop shop" deals and host the domain elswhere (register4less?). We'll see.

Siteground.com looks appealing as far as my new requirements go: Besides having PHP 5 (though it's stuck on MySQL 4), they offer 15 times as much space and 2.5 times as much traffic as my current host does, at a lower price. It sounds so good that it made me suspicious, even.
In this process, the MediaWiki installation has also been upgraded to the newest version (1.30.0), and is now served by an nginx server rather than Apache.

The chance of another human reading this is infinitesimal, but just in case you notice any issue, you know how to reach me.

6 September 2010

28 April 2008
Encyclopedia Ermariana is now once again on the subversion trunk of MediaWiki, currently branch 1.13.

18 April 2008
MediaWiki 1.13 looks spiffy. I'll try to get EE updated tonight.

25 October 2007
MediaWiki was updated to stable branch 1.11 today. A full backup of files and database was made before, but no problems have occurred.

However, I have had to disable the PDF-generating extension, which was already ancient and unfortunately not compatible with this latest version. I will try to find a replacement soon. Meanwhile, for those who often save articles as PDF files, I recommend a utility named PrimoPDF. This is a printer driver that prints PDF files, much like Acrobat Distiller but ad-supported.

You may also notice that I took the opportunity to bring back the visitor counters below.

21 January 2007
MediaWiki was updated to the development trunk today. For some applications, this would be ill-advised on a production version, but I'm ready to trust the version if Wikipedia runs it on their own site. Also, if the switch from 1.8 to 1.10 confused you for a moment as it did me, keep in mind that 1.10 is not "one point one zero", but "one point ten", which follows 1.9.

27 September 2006

14 September 2006
A site move is imminent now. The domain is up for renewal in two months, and I will register with Dreamhost in about 2 weeks. The cost of maintaining ermarian.net will (for the next two years) decrease from 8$ a month to 3$ a month, and MediaWiki will be upgraded to v1.7 soon after that.

The transition will be smoothed as much as possible, but it is likely the site will be unavailable for about a week.

24 August 2006

Let's see what happens.

20 April 2006
MediaWiki updated to 1.6.3. With partial shell access, this was more convenient than I'd initially feared, but still a hassle. If any weird things result from this, shout at me on [irc://irc.sorcery.net/ermariana IRC] (use the webclient if you don't have one) or the Board or email.

6 December 2005
With image functionality restored, I have uploaded all images that were saved on the old site.

8 November 2005
The wiki has been restored. Please be careful when editing - pages are to stay below 30 kb to avoid database issues. Images are rendered completely unusable until we change hosts (although I do still have them and can restore them when it's possible).

Immediate Goal
*Expand the Stubs.
*Finish the history timeline.
*8 May 2006: Using the mod_rewrite module, the page now uses a "/wiki/" root directory, like Wikipedia. Old links and bookmarks won't break, but internal links now use the new path.
History
Blades of Exile
I found Exile III on a shareware CD (from heise's software magazine c't, incidentally) late in the year 2000. Playing through the Exile series (I did not finish Exile I, but I played the other two until the shareware barrier), I soon found Blades of Exile. In Summer 2001, to be precise.

Late in 2001, I visited the SW boards, but didn't register or post.

Time passed.

Leave Your Sanity at the Door
I didn't have any kind of regular internet in 2002, until we moved houses in October. In March 2003, we installed our internet access, and I remembered the Spiderweb Software Boards two months later (call it latent insanity). In the BoE/BoA forums (BoA wasn't out, but it sure had a board) I quickly noticed that there was one flaw in the whole world of... um. That was precisely the problem - it didn't even have a name. Nobody knew anything about it, and what people did know, they disagreed about. Jeff had never named it, the other three continents (Aizo, Pralgad and Vantanas) floated as vague names through an incomplete reality, and there was no knowledge of the Empire's history, its culture or its mythology. Jeff had managed to tell a story without ever actually telling us about the world it was set in.

Ermarian
At least a name had been come up with by the community: Ermarian (goodness knows where it came from), which is often misspelled Ermaria. There was a long list of Emperors reaching from someone named Baltimore I into the far future, the late autumnal age of the world, and the emperor Tachyon IV There was the game canon of course - Hawthorne I, II, and III, the Empire War, Prazac. But it was all disordered and dispersed. If you wanted to know something, your best bet was in asking someone on the board, resulting in a long argument usually.

The Encyclopedia Ermariana
The project was conceived on July 17 2003, 23:57, roundabouts. I signed up a site at Geocities first, because that was the webspace used by most BoE fan sites (making one's own BoE site - graphics archives, scenario downloads, articles on design, etc - was still in fashion then, a trend that had had its high time a little over a year ago).

The site had a black background (#111111 actually, a kind of almost black color which makes you think you've set your screen too bright) with white text (#cccccc, a dirty light grey which makes you think your screen is about to die). The navigation was nonexistant. Eventually, my sister (who was then tutoring me in HTML; she'd taken to web design far more quickly than I had) taught me how to use frames, and the horror truly began. The menu I used was dark blue, which I changed to an orange-blue background pattern once I learnt to do that. The text itself was orange.

The project was booming and vegetating at the same time. Everyone was joining the project, but little content was actually being produced - partly because there was too little organization and communication, and partly because the website itself really sucked in such a way as to discourage writing content for it. The only way to get published was to write me an email with the content, have it mercilessly hacked to pieces and rewritten, and eventually published a few months later.

JavaScript
In January 2004, I learnt CSS and Javascript. The old HTML menu (which was basically a dozen of different menu pages that linked to each other, with the buttons stuck in "up" and "down" positions) was replaced by a more flashy one in which the menu buttons moved around on the page, and submenus were displayed without having to load a new page. It didn't work in Mozilla first, but it sure did later that year in Firefox.

Around July 2004, the background was changed to a light sky-blue, and the menu buttons were made smaller following a suggestion from ef. The page now looked almost pretty.

Aachen
In September 2004 I started an apprenticeship as Mathematical Technical Assistant in Aachen, which meant I finally learnt programming through other means than self-teaching (which is comparable to teaching oneself magic in a fantasy world: It can work, but it leads to unforeseen results). Also, it meant that I didn't have time for the site.

Nothing
For months on end, nothing happened in the Encyclopedia, with little bits of something in between. On January 21, I set up an forum in a fit of madness (ezboard sucks if you must know). On March 10, I learnt enough PHP to make a little automatic translator for Novah, the Vahnatai language. In July 12, I received two entries from Drakefyre.

MediaWiki
I've thought about changing the Encyclopedia into a wiki for a long time now. Definitely since January, when FZ suggested that Polaris set up a wiki site for easier communication. The trouble is that so far I had failed to understand the difference between Wikipedia and Wiki.

That's a pretty easy mistake right there, perhaps. But it meant I didn't know that Wikipedia is not run on just any Wiki system, but MediaWiki, a system specifically for designing a knowledge base/encyclopedia/media archive.

Today (August 22, 2005) I realized this, and within less than an hour, I had set up a working MediaWiki on my webspace here.
*20 Jan 2015: MediaWiki updated to 1.24.1
*7 Dec 2013: MediaWiki updated to 1.22.1
*22 Sept 2013: The Encyclopedia Ermariana is now hosted by CloudSoarer.
*10 Feb 2013: Site updated to 1.21alpha, and freshly compiled PHP 5.4.11.
*12 March 2012: Encyclopedia is first to be brought back online after an intrusion.
Old messages
*6 September 2011: Site reactivated after 6 weeks downtime. Registration now closed. Spam vigorously purged.
*6 September 2010: Server moved, and PHP updated to 5.3.3 (MediaWiki is at 1.17alpha). Also, several fixes were required.
*20 September 2009: PHP updated to 5.2.11, and the site is back up.
*24 August 2009: MediaWiki 1.16alpha failed to work with PHP 5.2.8, and the site was taken down temporarily.
*28 April 2008: MediaWiki software updated to 1.13. This is the SVN trunk; updates will be more frequent from now on.
*25 October 2007: After a long hiatus from EE, I have updated the code base to 1.11. The upgrade went smoothly and without noticeable problems.
*1 June 2007: A bug in the latest trunk version of MediaWiki appears to have broken page headings. I will try to fix this next week.
*21 January 2007: MediaWiki was updated to version 1.10alpha. (read more)
*19 October 2006: Wiki software was updated to version 1.8.2.
*27 September 2006: Site moved to DreamHost; software upgraded to 1.7.1. Clean reinstall, see current events for more.
*22 June 2006: Several things: Software upgrade to 1.6.7. Also, links here should no longer point to /index.php. They will still work, but automatically redirect to /wiki. Also, the logo has been briefly removed, pending the design of a new one. Please mail me if you would like to do that. :)
*8 May 2006: Using the mod_rewrite module, the page now uses a "/wiki/" root directory, like Wikipedia. Old links and bookmarks won't break, but internal links now use the new path.
* January 20th: I am about to upgrade the Wiki software from version 1.5.3 to 1.5.6 which was released yesterday. Naturally, I will back it up first, but still, I hope there aren't any problems.

Arancaytar: Fixed the horribly broken encoding.

Soruharva is the traditional language of magic and spells. Some wizards now theorize that the language is in fact not significant for the effect on the spell, and rather a way to focus and visualize that effect (and thus any other language would do fine as long as the mage is able to concentrate). However, Soruharva is still the only language commonly used.

General Information
The particular form of Soruharva detailed below is Soruharva Proper which is the standardised version used by the Empire and differs slightly from what is used in Avernum. Another variant is Draconic Soruharva which is spoken by Dragons and used in naming.

Grammar
Sentence Structure
Soruharva adheres to a subject-object-verb structure rather than the subject-verb-object structure of modern Imperial Standard.
Statement
[SUBJECT] [DIRECT OBJECT] [VERB] [INDIRECT OBJECTS].
Questions
[SUBJECT] [QUERY PRONOUN] [DIRECT OBJECT] [VERB] [INDIRECT OBJECTS]

Nouns
Noun Conjugations
Examples using the words sarca (blade), lúm (hole, opening) and haros (master).

Pronouns
Soruharva differentiates between personal and impersonal pronouns in the third person. Which it makes the distinction between sentient and non-sentient entities. In the terms of Imperial Standard he/she vs. it.
If you have something important to say or ask, don't hesitate to use as many of them at once if you are able to; the more people will be likely to responde.

Firstly, the Encyclopedia Board, a basic punBB installation, is the official message forum of this place. Secondly, you can use the Community Portal and the Talk pages of each article to ask questions right here on the site.

Thirdly, I set up a channel on the SorceryNet IRC network, named [irc://irc.sorcery.net/ermariana #ermariana].

Fourtly, I can, as always, be emailed at arancaytar.ilyaran@gmail.com. If you want to look official, you can send it encyclopedia@ermarian.net, but that just forwards it.
* January 20th: I am about to upgrade the Wiki software from version 1.5.3 to 1.5.6 which was released yesterday. Naturally, I will back it up first, but still, I hope there aren't any problems.

Avernum: Escape from the Pit what this means for the encyclopaedia
While playing through the remake I noticed that alot of stuff had been added or changed to fit in with the second trilogy or to clarify.

So how do we approach? As this seems to be a repeat of the Exile/Avernum Conflicts.

I suggest do this from a case by case thing.

* The fact that the major nephilim tribe active during A1 events was given a name? Add all that new stuff in. They are the Split-Tail Clan btw.

* Motrax clarifying how he is related to his siblings (Spoiler: He isn't blood related)? Nice! Expand that entry.

* Prince Hrothar being replaced by an nameless undead guardian? Keep the original.

* New Date (2185 vs. 747)? Screw. That.

* Pyrog's changed gender? I have no idea. Doesn't really change much.

There is more stuff. Maybe I should start a thread at the forums? Hell, we may need a new template for A:EftP conflicts.

::Case-by-case is best, and I agree with pretty much all of your suggestions. The general guideline should be to take the more specific information as you did (Split-Tail clan from A:EFTP, Hrothar from E/A1). Also... Athron's gender was flipped earlier, right? Maybe we should just make that stuff canonical. Re dates: Maybe we can say they're using Old Aizoan reckoning or something, which is way out of style in the mainstream?
::Personally I'm wondering why Jeff would change that. The only difference I could see between Ermarian being in the 8th or 22nd century are that the latter feels more Sci-Fi and the former more medieval, even though the timeline of Ermarian is completely unrelated to ours. -- Arancaytar | Send Reply! --- <i>That is not dead which can eternal lie...</i> 13:00, 25 April 2012 (PDT)

I'd say it is (if we get to keep the Herbs subcategory at all). Paragraphs must not start with a space. If the first character in any line or paragraph is a space, it is interpreted as code, which is automatically surrounded by a box and printed in monospace. :-) -- Arancaytar | Send Reply! --- <i>That is not dead which can eternal lie...</i> 12:28, 6 December 2007 (PST)
Basically making a category for templates didn't work out.
