I've spent quite a while going through Kel's excellent notes and making changes to the history of Exile and the founders. Everything should now be aligned with Av 1-3, but I'm holding off on ZKR until I can confirm some A4 stuff. The only contradiction is a history book saying Micah ruled for 40 years before 817, and Erika saying in 833 that he ruled for 20-some years. What Erika said makes absolutely no sense with the other timelines considered, so I just ignored that. -- Drakey 20:09, 31 Aug 2005 (CEST)
I thought that there would be more, so I changed the statistics to add up to 100% of the religious citizenry (not including secular citizens.) My question is, what about the other 84% of the empire? === Demons ===
Aran -- your change to demons doesn't make sense to me -- the sentence seems even more confusing now than before. However, I'm not sure if you misinterpreted my version (it WAS a bit confusing) or if you are actually suggesting something different, so I'll wait to hear from you before I change anything. I was trying to say that, despite the bans, most mages end up involved in demon stuff. ---Slartucker 04:49, 12 January 2006 (CST)

P.S. Are rakshasha (however the heck you spell that) demonic? I seem to recall them summoned demons complete with pentagram in the Tiger's Den in Ex2, so I'm doubtful. I'm also skeptical about efreeti, though I suppose that's a matter of interpretation.
Re: Rakshasi
Interesting, I'll have to look into the rakshasi. As for efreeti, I have always assumed that Jeff's efreeti were borrowings from Arabian lore, in which they are the second of five classes of jinn, a magical race that shares some characteristics with Avernum-style demons but are certainly different. At least I've never seen them referred to as demonic anywhere, canonical or not.
Re: Efreeti
:Efreet classification: well, they're sentient, and they're as much a race as demons are. I don't think either would be classified as humanoid, though they often have humanoid form. Does everything need a sub-classification beyond the bestiary category, though?
:Meanwhile, while researching dragon gender-bending (there's more than I realized) I have discovered yet more flaws in my First Expedition stuff. Sigh. As much as I like my narrative, I think I'm going to have to get rid of it and replace it with a bullet point list of places they visited and things they did. The evidence is just all over the place!
Illithids
Nice way to handle the illithid canonicity. I think I may do something similar for 'normal' versions of rakshasi and efreeti. Fun Fact: Jeff flipped the singular and plural forms of both of those races, from the originals. ---Slartucker 20:43, 19 January 2006 (CST)
Mmn. I completely understand the concern about which scenarios should be included. I'm just going to use my best judgment, and if you or Drakey (or anyone else) wants to correct me, you're always welcome to. (Three cheers for the elegant democracy of the wiki!) Alternately, if someone wants to outline -- perhaps as a generally useful OOC article -- exactly what sources are considered legitimate fanon by people who have "been in the community long enough to be considered experts on their subject," I think that would be a very useful thing.
Actually, I think this makes sense. At the moment, it is really closer to "Nations" than it is to "Persons" since it includes stuff like the Scimitar, but not groupings of multiple persons like the Triad or the Five. --- Slartucker 10:33, 6 February 2006 (CST)
We're now getting multiple bot attacks per week. While I know you have a backup of the site somewhere, it still worries me that the problem is only likely to get worse and not better. I don't know if there's an easy way to do some kind of craigslist-style humanity verification, but if not, perhaps it would make sense to require that new accounts be OKed by you before they can make edits. I don't want to discourage potential contributors, but the fact that it is now taking your time to undo bot damage every couple of days is relevant, too. -- Slarty 14:14, 7 July 2007 (PDT)
Kirlin is the name of the province in southern Pralgad, just northwest of Blackcrag Fortress. This area is divided into 2 parts, north and south of a smaller Mountain Chain, called "The Spine" or "The Spine of Gath-Hoth".
These mountains are full of narrow caves and cliffs, as well as many waterfalls, a very dangerous environment which many people explored but few left alive. Many dangerous beasts were said to live in these caves, but they were never seen to leave the mountains.

Due to these possible dangers for the near region, a permanent empire security station has been set at the only narrow entrance to the east of Keptus.

Kirlin has a few larger forests which are ideal for lumber workers, as well as a long coastline, which invites travellers, adventurers and merchants. This province is also known for rich alchemical resources from the southern swamps, and to own several mineral mines.
Fire golems are elementals. They can breathe fire, similar to that of a dragon, although far less powerful.

Ice Golems
Ice golems are also elementals, and more devastating than fire golems. Their cold breath penetrates easily through armor, stunning soldiers and opening them up for the kill.

Jeweled Golems
Jeweled golems are even more dangerous than the elemental golems as they can shoot electricity and they are harder to kill. The early model jeweled golems had the ability to spit acid at their opponents, but this was phased out in favor of the ray weapon for the later models.

Demon Golems
Demon golems are the most dangerous of the plague golems because of their limited intelligence and magical prowess. They can also breathe fire, although they prefer to pepper their enemies with spells.

Controlling Golems
Golems are usually controlled by a stationary command centre, which is also often the golems' main energy source. They can exist, fight, etc. without a constant energy source as well, but then they are either much weaker or they can't exist and fight for a long time, but with their normal power. Either way, they will run out of energy sooner or later and crumble.

Stationary sources are often too weak and can only give energy to the golems for a quite limited time, but special crystals can work years without any problems, due to the energy being better conducted through the crystal ends. At the time of the Surface Plagues, the Vahnatai used powerful Mind Crystals to control the golems. Once they and all possible energy sources were destroyed, most golems crumbled or got unusable.

Mages who are able to create golems are usually also able to give them energy, but if the mage is not exceptionally strong, both the golem and the mage can exist, but both are weakened. Stronger mages can control many golems alone, without an energy source, but if too many golems are connected with a magic caster, it shortens the lifetime heavily. If the golems are only connected to a mage, they usually got no emergency energy stored and crumble or get immobile as soon as the living energy source dies.
Aescal was one of the oldest worshipped gods, with many worshipping priests, who were very skilled in the healing arts. Not much else is known about this religion, probably because Aescal's followers were slaughtered when the Empire started its race- and religion crusades.

Magical Crystals
Crystals can be often found in Exile, many of them got magical abilities. The First Visitation and early exiled adventurers often found special blue, glowing crystals, which were very magical. These were called Mind Crystals, and were probably remains from a Vahnatai Clan, which lived in the Caves, where now the Kingdom of Avernum exists. Anyone who found such a crystal was able to learn to to strengthen his body or his mind with the crystal's help.
Sadly they can be used only once, then they melt and vanish.

Other magical crystals, were also found both on the Surface and in Exile, such as Shielding Crystals, Piercing Crystals and many more. The former create a magical, indestructible shield around a being for a while, the latter is able to destroy most magical barriers.

Sometimes magically charged crystals are also used to power magical Vahnatai machinery. These crystals are long lasting and powerful energy sources.

Crystal Creation and Enchantment
The Vahnatai are very skilled crystal "smiths" and are as such responsible for the creation of most crystals which were found. Human mages have learned the art of enchanting crystals as well, but the known possibilities are very crude compared to the Vahnatai's skills with crystals. Vahnatais often store magical power or knowledge in Crystals, which lead to the creation of Mind Crystals.
Sadly only few Vahnatai clans were this skilled with Crystals, so Mind Crystals are rare these days and most are only remains of older, extincted Vahnatai clans.

Normal crystals can get grown like Stalagmites, but due to their natural magic and special spells cast by the crystal grower, they can be created very fast already.
Once harvested (how exactly is still a secret of the Vahnatai), they get delivered to the mages, who cast spells on the crystals, to remove any flaws and create a perfect crystal, which can be used without risk for magical works.

Sadly not all crystals can be made completely perfect, or sometimes flaws appear while enchanting the crystal. If this happens, the use of a crystal can be deadly, which sometimes makes crystals hurt a person when used, instead of helping.

Crystal Souls and Soul Crystals
Legendary Vahnatais get conserved in Crystals, shortly before they would usually die because of age. (Vahnatais can get easily a few human centuries old) Every Vahnatai's dead body gets put in tombs, but only the few chosen ones are allowed to get preserved for the Eternity.
Once the body of such a Vahnatai is too weak to live, a ritual is cast to extract the soul and knowledge of the Vahnatai and transfer it into a Soul Crystal. Once such a crystal is filled with a Soul, it is called a Crystal Soul.

These Soul Crystals often get enchanted by the Vahnatai who will live in it later, else by the most skilled mages. Once a Vahnatai is preserved, he/she got all the power and knowledge which he/she had in mortal life as well as endless magical power for spells. Warriors rarely get the honor to live on in a Soul Crystal (due to their learned skills being usedless, as Soul Crystals are immobile, except for teleportation), but if, they get the same magical power which every other preserved mage receives when crystallified.

Sadly a few Vahnatai Souls were put into flawed Crystals, which weakens the Soul but enhances the power of emotions. These Crystal Souls often get mad and cruel. As soon as this gets noticed, they are usually excommunicated from their clan and placed in a remote tomb.
Skylark School of Magery was probably one of the best Schools of Magery, due to its location being in Pralgad. It was closed and sealed in 762 IE with magical stones.

Nearly 100 years later, in 842 IE, most residents of Skylark Vale suffered from an unknown curse. Humans, plants and animals, all alike suffered badly. A small group of inexperienced adventurers was sent there to find and remove the source.

Soon after searching the Vale, it became clear that the mysterious School of Magery was connected to this plague and so the adventurers tried, and after some help from residents, got inside.

Inside of the school were not only empty buildings, but also many of the creatures which were held there for experiments, which have gone rogue.

Resident Creatures
Rumors tell that the adventurers encountered a wide range of hostile creatures, like evil Gremlins and Chitrachs, but also helpful creatures, like Spiders#Giant Intelligent Friendly Talking Spiders and even a Dragon.

The Cure
Later the source of the plague was found, it was caused by toxic waste remains from older experiments. It was flowing into a part of the river, which flows through a large underground cave, directly under Skylark Vale. Due to this river being the main water source of the vale, most parts of it were affected by the acidic water. Luckily the adventurers managed to stop the waste soon and cure the Valley.

The Future
The School of Magery is now still empty (except for remaining creatures, like the Friendly Spiders) but is hoped to get cleared fully of monsters and remaining chemical waste, but this may take years, due to the size of the School.
The Antimagic field is one of the more curious phenomena. Although itself magical, it appears to repel all other sources of magic. Wherever this field is, it blocks magical effects from passing through - both those originating from and those targeted at a field.

The field does not last very long once created, and remains in the same place. It can be seen by the naked eye as a faint cloud of green light.

Some places are protected by antimagic fields against forced entry or attack - the fields need to be constantly regenerated for this.

The null bug has a natural ability of projecting antimagic fields when agitated.

Powerful Mages are also known to be able to let such clouds appear in battle, to neutralisate dangerous enemy magic casters. Sometimes such magi also create defense devices (active and passive ones) for important places, which are able to constantly create Antimagic fields around itself (active) or in a selected, ususally larger area. (passive)
The "active" defenses are called this, because they can often defend themselves with indirect magical defenses.

Rumors tell that the adventurers encountered a wide range of hostile creatures, like evil Gremlins and Chitrachs, but also helpful creatures, like Friendly Talking Spiders and even a Dragon.
