Dintiradan: Line breaks hate me.

Once every number of years, an Encyclopaedia contributor rises in fame and stature, renowned for the ability to research a multitude of topics tirelessly, always altruistically devoted to the truth.

I am Dintiradan. I am not that researcher.

Oh well.

Leaving the big topics to the researching triad of Aran, Drakey, and Slarty, I mostly work on 'filler' stubs, de-orphaning pages, and other minor edits.

By User:Slartucker, for 'tis funny and need to be saved somewhere:

You see a strange man, middle aged, calm and confident. He has a staff, carved in the shape of a cobra.
\nNAME?\n
He nods to you. "Welcome to my Encyclopedia. I am known as 'Aran'. I am of the Triad."
\nJOB?\n
"Mostly I teach, but lately I have been researching a new spell, which would make a strip of bacon drop on someone's head, even from a long distance. It would be a wondrous spell. I wouldn't have a chance to find it without this library."
<br>TRIAD?<br>
"I, Slarty, and Drakey rule the Encyclopedia. However, I have been busy, and Drakey is away, so it is mainly Slarty that is in charge. I wonder what he has been doing?"
<br>TEACH?<br>
"Yes. Powerful scripts. But I've been busy lately, and haven't time to do any teaching now."
<br>NOOBS?<br>
"Yes. Alorael and I look after them, teach them UBB markup, discipline them as necessary."
<br>LIBRARY?<br>
"Yes. One of the many gifts of Terror's Martyr. About whom the less said, the better."

A young man with short dark hair sits at the desk, writing. Leaning against his chair is a short wooden staff, carved in the shape of a twisting serpent. The runes on his robe seems to indicate he is a person of great power.
<br>NAME?<br>
"Greetings. I am Slarty, of the Triad."
<br>JOB?<br>
"I am of the Triad that controls the Encyclopedia."
<br>TRIAD?<br>
"Yes. The Encyclopedia Ermariana is run by three users. I control research. Aran in is charge of teaching. And one of us is absent."
<br>ABSENT?<br>
He gives you a truly ugly smile. "Yes. One of the three is away. We don't know when he will be back."
<br>TEACHING?<br>
"Yes. He may be of aid to you. He's around here somewhere."
<br>RESEARCH?<br>
"On many, many things. This is an ambitious time for the Encyclopedia, a time of great and auspicious happenings. Right now, I am trying to find information on the First Expedition."
<br>...GREP?<br>
"A strange and powerful item, only usable by the greatest of users. I would say more about it, but I won't. Suffice it to say this is a great and auspicious time for the Encyclopedia." He smiles, in a disturbingly sharklike way.

You see an aging, bald man in brilliant crimson robes. He supports himself with an oaken staff carved in the shape of a cobra.
<br>NAME?<br>
He looks at you nervously. "I am Drakey, of the Triad," he says.
<br>JOB?<br>
His face sours as he looks at you. "I would like to welcome you, visitors, but your arrival fills me with fear. Let us just say I am here waiting."
<br>WAITING?<br>
"For my fellow members of the Triad to complete their business."
<br>BUSINESS?<br>
"Yes. A messy, dangerous business. They plan to dump a Scenario! And not any Scenario, but a Scenario Epic!"
<br>SCENARIO?<br>
"Ah. Be careful where you say that word. It has dangerous power. They are the lieutenants of fanon, powerful, and cruel. And my colleagues planned to dump one who is powerful enough to lead them. A Solid Adventure, as it were."
"And now this foul deed is done! Heavens help us all!"
<br>TRIAD?<br>
"The Triad rules the Encyclopedia Ermariana. There is myself, Slarty, the initiator of this foolish operation, and 'Aran', who is too lost in bizarre schemes to do anything about it. Oh, the Triad is a sad thing these days. It almost makes me long for TM's return."
"Almost, but not quite."
<br>TM?<br>
He smiles sadly. "Terror's Martyr. Scripter without par. Banished into Misc. by the fools above. Consumed with utter hatred. Without him, we would all be barbarians, rooting about in the filth."
<br>BARBARIANS?<br>
"He led us. Then his hatred drove him away."
<br>HATRED?<br>
"For those who cast him down. The mods above, together, were strong enough to curse him with death should the autocensor touch him. When he realized he couldn't break the curse, he began to plot."
<br>PLOT?<br>
"Ways to bring doom to the forums. He began to perform strange experiments, and consort with scenarios. Soon, all he was good for was planning his revenge. So, we asked him to leave. He now lives far, far to the west, in a huge tower."
"And, to tell the truth, I'd rather not know what he is up to."
Because of their shape, pylons are also well suited to storing and transfering magical energy. After the Reconciliation, Avernum constructed and enchanted a series of pylons to facilitate teleportation to and from Fort Avernum.
The Vahnatai have even developed lethal versions of these pylons, capable of blasting anyone nearby with large amounts of energy.

Quickfire is a special sort of fire: crackling with magical energy, intensely hot, and extremely dangerous. It spreads through the air as fast as a man can run, and very little short of solid stone or a magic barrier will halt it in its path. As a result, it tends to cause indiscriminate and total destruction, and it is used less often in combat than in magical traps.

Quickfire does not occur naturally, and is only created by magic. Its creation was originally a secret of the Vahnatai, although it is now created and studied by many human mages. The magic which can create it is complicated. The magic which can control it is even more complicated, so much so that no known human has ever mastered the ability to do so (with the possible exception of Erika Redmark).

The flames of quickfire will die down on their own, if they are left in an enclosed area. They may last for hours, days, or even longer, depending on the space they have to burn in.

Special Applications of Quickfire
Certain types of augmented magic barriers dissolve when they come into contact with quickfire. The most famous of these barriers was developed by Garzahd and Enla.

The skilled application of crystallomancy is capable of trapping quickfire energy in a crystal, known as a Phoenix Egg. Although the Empire has attempted to create such crystals, notably at Pyrog Labs, only the Vahnatai have done so successfully.

Common Lizards
Lizards are tiny, nimble reptiles. Like most small animals, they are fairly ubiquitous. They feed on the even smaller -- insects -- and they use rocks, bushes, and whatever is handy to hide from predators.

Unlike most small animals, lizards are a commonly employed as a familiar by mages. It is unknown what qualities make lizards such an attractive animal for that purpose.

Giant Lizards
Giant lizards are, as the name implies, much larger relatives of the common lizard. Giant lizards typically grow to be about 10 feet long from head to tail. They are found everywhere in the caves of Ermarian, and are also found in smaller numbers on the surface. They exude a characteristic smell -- some might say stink -- which can be overpowering in the presence of many lizards. Although some giant lizards are comfortable in water, they are not amphibians.

Giant lizards are violent, irritable beasts, stupid, lazy, and most unsuitable for domestication. However, because they are the only beast of burden that flourishes in the caves, they are commonly used as livestock by practically every humanoid race that lives underground. Their meat has a famously vile flavor, but it also keeps better underground than the meat of cows and other surface animals. Because it is nearly impossible to restrain the beasts' urges to eat things, farmers typically file down their teeth and claws, and restrain them with chains.

Interestingly enough, the primary commercial use for giant lizards is as transportation. Many Avernite merchants use giant lizards to pull their wagons full of cargo and goods. While giant lizards are not the fastest movers, they are strong enough to pull large loads long distances without tiring. Every merchant watches over their lizards closely, however, since none of them trust their lizards to be peaceful if they escape from their restraints. Since every attempt to bring horses and mules to Exile has failed, giant lizards are the next best thing.

There are also several documented cases of lizard-riders that ride giant lizards into battle. In most cases, they are Slithzerikai, but there are a few rumors of human lizard-riders as well.

Giant lizards are also valued for their tough hides, which are the primary source of leather below ground.

Fire Lizards
Fire lizards are slightly larger than regular giant lizards, and are distinguished by the flaming breath they exhale when they feel aggressive. For this reason, fire lizards are never domesticated. They are often found living in colonies alongside salamanders and drakes.

Ice Lizards
Counterparts to fire lizards, ice lizards exhale gusts of freezing breath. Unlike fire lizards, they are rarely found in large groups.

Salamanders
Salamanders are dangerous cousins of the fire lizard. They bear a mystical connection to the element of fire, which constantly radiates out from their bodies, burning and singing everything around them.

Basilisks
The rarest variety of giant lizard is the fearful basilisk. Basilisks are as slow and as stupid as any giant lizard, but they bear one of the most potent magical abilities of any creature. The gaze of a basilisk can turn other creatures to stone.

Stronger, faster, and meaner than a regular basilisk is the ur-basilisk. They often lead colonies of basilisks and are notoriously hard to control.

The crocolisk is an amphibious relative of the basilisk, at home in streams, ponds, and other small bodies of water.

Drakes
Drakes are something of a middle ground between giant lizards and dragons. Drakes can live for over a century, and can grow to sizes as great as 30 feet tall and 50 feet long, from head to tail -- somewhere between half and two-thirds the size of a dragon. Like dragons, they are intelligent, capable at magic, and often collect a hoard of treasure. Unlike dragons, they are sociable creatures who compete fiercely with their fellows and may even live alongside groups of the lesser lizards.

Most drakes breath fire. A few, however, breath ice, and are known as ice drakes.

In some areas, the most powerful drakes are called drake lords, a title they must earn by completing a series of tests.

Drake skin is even more resilient than giant lizard hide, and is mildly magical. It is a common reagent in the enchanting of items. It is very pliable when properly treated, and is sometimes used to bind magical tomes, or less commonly, as simple parchment.

Appearance
Dragons look something like very large, winged lizards. They have a long, sinewy body which they sometimes coil up in the manner of a snake.

A dragon's stature varies not only with its age, but also with its power, and in particular, the size of its hoard. The most powerful dragons have grown to heights of more than 25 feet, and lengths of more than 100 feet, from head to tail.

Dragons are covered in scales, generally of green and red hue. The scales of a fully-grown dragon are very difficult to pierce, and can withstand extreme temperatures and strong magical forces. They are often sought by enchanters as a powerful source of enchantment.

Magical Traits
Dragons are capable of projecting terror and confusion, and generally clouding the minds of any lesser creatures who approach them. This clouding is probably responsible for the fact that the same dragon is often reported to be different sizes and genders by each human who encounters him or her.

Fiery breath is the most celebrated and most feared ability of dragonkind. Few creatures can survive the flames.

Dragons have a natural ability to manipulate the forces of magic. Although they can master arts such as spell casting, their most powerful magic is innate, and cannot be taught. Such dragon magic is usually put to more subtle ends than humanoid magery, ends fitting the introverted nature of the dragon. For example, the magics that alter the dragon's form, nourish it on a diet not at all proportional to its size, and protect its hoard are all inherent to its race.

One area in which dragon magic is uniquely strong is scrying. Dragons can practice clairvoyance and clairaudience at distances untenable to even the greatest of mages.

Behavior and Personality
Despite their tremendous size and their many predatorial advantages, dragons are not active predators. Indeed, they usually prefer to avoid the lesser races altogether. Though they will sometimes keep fire lizards or other reptiles as pets, most reside far afield from the troublesome clamor of other talking creatures.

By nature, dragons are strong-minded recluses. Perhaps because of this introversion, neither heredity nor upbringing shapes a dragon's personality the way it does for many sentient creatures, and even dragons from the same brood may have little in common. Some seek power, while others seek wisdom or simple peace. Some befriend humans, while others see them as prey, or as creatures to be exploited.

All dragons, however, are proud. They are not stupid, and few will allow pride to compromise their continued existence. But they are champion grudge-holders. A dragon who has been wronged will find a way to take revenge. And with such a long life, he can afford to be very patient.

History
Dragons were once spread across the surface of Ermarian. However, when the Empire began exterminating magical creatures, dragons quickly became one of their most important targets, due to their power and the impossibility of controlling them. Because dragons mate infrequently, the campaign literally decimated their population. It is estimated that fewer than 20 dragons survived it, using their magic to conceal themselves underground.

Around 830 IE, Athron mothered a brood of hatchlings on the surface of Valorim. This is believed to be the only new brood in many centuries.

Dragons of Exile
There were five dragons, all from the same brood, who dwelt in Exile and nearby caverns for many centuries. The dragons had been around since before the last Resting of the Vahnatai, though how much earlier is unclear. The five dragons were Motrax the kindly, Sulfras the strong, Pyrog the cruel, Khoth the wise, and Athron the reclusive.

Though all dragons distrust humans and hate the Empire for its crusades against them, these siblings experienced protracted persecution. Pyrog was slain and Motrax mortally wounded in human attacks, while Sulfras and Khoth were tricked and enslaved by archmage and commander Garzahd.

During the first century after humans began to live in the caves, each of the surviving dragons fled the area. Athron gave birth to a new brood, while Sulfras and Khoth plotted revenge against the Empire.

NAME?
He looks at you nervously. "I am Drakey, of the Triad," he says.
JOB?
His face sours as he looks at you. "I would like to welcome you, visitors, but your arrival fills me with fear. Let us just say I am here waiting."
WAITING?
"For my fellow members of the Triad to complete their business."
BUSINESS?
"Yes. A messy, dangerous business. They plan to dump a Scenario! And not any Scenario, but a Scenario Epic!"
SCENARIO?
"Ah. Be careful where you say that word. It has dangerous power. They are the lieutenants of fanon, powerful, and cruel. And my colleagues planned to dump one who is powerful enough to lead them. A Solid Adventure, as it were."
"And now this foul deed is done! Heavens help us all!"
TRIAD?
"The Triad rules the Encyclopedia Ermariana. There is myself, Slarty, the initiator of this foolish operation, and 'Aran', who is too lost in bizarre schemes to do anything about it. Oh, the Triad is a sad thing these days. It almost makes me long for TM's return."
"Almost, but not quite."
TM?
He smiles sadly. "Terror's Martyr. Scripter without par. Banished into Misc. by the fools above. Consumed with utter hatred. Without him, we would all be barbarians, rooting about in the filth."
BARBARIANS?
"He led us. Then his hatred drove him away."
HATRED?
"For those who cast him down. The mods above, together, were strong enough to curse him with death should the autocensor touch him. When he realized he couldn't break the curse, he began to plot."
PLOT?
"Ways to bring doom to the forums. He began to perform strange experiments, and consort with scenarios. Soon, all he was good for was planning his revenge. So, we asked him to leave. He now lives far, far to the west, in a huge tower."
"And, to tell the truth, I'd rather not know what he is up to."

Dintiradan: Linked to Magic-Curses, and added controversy over Empire-Avernum War

Erika was the most powerful mage of the Five and their political leader when they were first Exiled. She led their struggles on the surface and underground. Before she was Exiled, Garzahd and his students placed a powerful curse on her. The curse was said to kill her if the sun ever touched her again, dooming her to life in the caves. But this did not faze her, and she did all she could to help the citizens of Exile, including teleporting a group of adventurers to Hawthorne III's throne room to assassinate him.

When a small group of Avernites from Unspecified Services returned to the surface and found Valorim awash with monster plagues, she helped the adventurers destroy the Vahnatai operation when she dueled Rentar-Ihrno. Unfortunately, Rentar exploited her curse and just as she was about to be defeated, she blasted a hole into the ceiling and a sunbeam touched Erika's skin, killing her instantly. She is considered a hero to many of the Avernites, and will be remembered by those forever with admiration. Others, however, considered her mad with revenge against Hawthorne and Garzahd after her falling-out with the Triad, and accuse her of instigating the Empire-Avernum War.

In 839, after the reconciliation of the Empire and Avernum, Redmark College was founded and named in her honor near the City of Dawn in Southeastern Valorim.

Magical Ability
To this day, no one is certain how powerful Erika really was. While her power clearly had its limits, she conveniently worked around them. Erika is known to have bent a number of demons to her will (although the Empire was able to do this easily, Erika did it alone) and was able to create doomguards, a craft that is thought lost even to most imperial wizards. During her battle with Rentar-Ihrno, Erika's summoned minions outnumbered the Vahnatai's, and the Avernite agents present noted that while the duel left Rentar-Ihrno looking exhausted, Erika was barely fazed. It appears likely that Erika surpassed her rival in sheer power, and could not have been beaten if it were not for the curse.

Many scholars, particularly those from Avernum, name Erika as the most powerful mage to ever set foot on Ermarian.
* Taught magic to generations of Avernite mages
* Created cavewood trees, capable of growing in stone
* Helped build the Tower of Magi
* Masterminded and facilitated the assassination of Hawthorne III
* Assissted the Empire War Heroes in the recovery of Vyvnas-Bok and the assassination of Garzahd
* Dueled Rentar-Ihrno, sacrificing her life to allow the Surface Explorers to destroy the machinery responsible for the Valorim plagues

Magic is the collective human term for nearly all phenomena that seem to violate or in any other way disregard the laws of nature. Magic itself, however, is split into as many different fields as any other science, and many of these are only barely related to each other.

Spells
Virtually all magical fields rely on the use of magic spells. Spells are controlled, clearly defined processes that are activated at will by a certain sentient magician — the caster — and have a certain reproducible effect: Given the proper materials, knowledge and skill, any wizard could cause it.

While new spells are occasionally being invented in magical research laboratories — involving risky experiments — most spells are quite old and have long become part of the so-called spell canon. This canon is maintained and updated by a consortium at the imperial schools of magery in Pralgad, and although the Tower of Magi in Avernum was never a formal member of this process, the peace treaty negotiated by Prazac and Micah involved a limited exchange of knowledge and technologies between them, synchronizing the spell canon once again.

Spells, once invented (or rather discovered) by a wizard, are documented in a set of instructions and formulae. Sadly, these instructions have never followed a standardized notation, making the process of learning a spell anything from easy to an impossible feat depending on the instructions' clarity. Scrolls can be made that emulate most spell effects, but the process is quite a different one.

Sources of Magic
There are three major components in a magical reaction. The caster channels and directs the power of a magical source, causing a certain magical effect. The same source can typically be harnessed for a variety of effects; likewise, the same effect can be created using many different sources.

The most common source of magic is arcane. Wizards, and most other spellcasters, have learned to absorb the arcane energy that permeates everything. (This energy is densely present in energy potions.) They can then release this energy in the form of a spell. Divine and demonic sources are tapped by priests and shamans. Finally, highly magical creatures such as dragons often have innate magic, a natural fount they are able to draw upon in order to use their abilities.

Sometimes magic-users employ an auxiliary source, which can greatly enhance their ability to shape a magical effect. Crystals are most commonly used for this purpose; of particular note and power are the Emerald of Avernum and the Crystal Souls of the Vahnatai. Enchanted objects, such as jewelry, may be crafted just for this purpose. In some cases, objects with great size and complexity are used in this way, such as teleportation augmenters.

Fields of Magic
While the effects of individual spells can be quite diverse, most casters focus their magical learning on a single type of effect. This allows them to develop greater precision in manipulating the relevant magical forces. Some of the most prominent fields include:

Evocation of forces
Magical effects which are hard to categorize are often lumped into evocation, the broadest field of magic. Stricter definitions of evocation hold that it is limited to effects that deal solely with insubstantial forces. For this reason, its magic includes some of rawest, most powerful, and least delicate effects. Unlike other fields, its spells are rarely used in conjunction with nonmagical crafts.

There are two major branches of this field. The evocation of elemental forces, the trademark of the mage, is concerned with the creation and control of fire, water, lightning, and so on. This also covers the creation of related substances, such as poison, acid, and quickfire. For all the power of a fireball, elemental forces are relatively easy to manipulate, perhaps explaining why nations like the Empire are so quick to control the teaching of magic. The magic innate to many beasts, such as dragons and drakes, also belongs in this category.

The manipulation of energy covers effects that harness raw force, such as magic barriers and basic magical shields, as well as those that organize magical energy for a specific purpose, such as disrupting other magic.

Evocation is very widely used. It is honed by battlefront mages like Silverio, Mairwen, Konig, and Kyanan, and slobbered over by adventurers, though it is also a field in which the expertise of archmages like Rentar-Ihrno is readily apparent.

Divination
Specialists: Athron, Aimee, Patrick, Aydin, Thompson

Divination is the field of magic concerned with gathering information. For the most part, that means scrying. It also extends to spiritual projection, and the identification of items and monsters.

Mages practiced in this field are able to scry at vastly greater distances, and are often sought after by military operations for the great strategic advantage this can provide. Career mage-sages, however, tend to be recluses, often using their magic to hide from others.

Teleportation
Specialists: Mahdavi, Vidrain, Seles, Ernest

See Teleportation. Teleportation is the art of moving things from one place to another, usually via portals. It is a complex and difficult field, but is intensely studied because of its many practical applications.

Warding
Specialists: Garzahd, Enla, Rone, Elderan

Most spells, when cast, have an effect which takes place immediately. In a warding spell, the spell effect is instead woven together with an object or creature. The resulting ward functions similarly to an enchantment, and can be activated later under certain conditions. Unlike enchantments, wards simply attach themselves to their target; they do not actually alter it.

Wards are permanent. They require intricate construction; nonmagical aids such as runes and tattoos are usually employed to help guide their creation. Wards are very difficult to remove without damaging the object or creature they have been placed on.

Some applications of warding include magical locks and traps, guardian runes, augmentations to magic barriers, certain powerful seals, and curses.

Necromancy
Specialists: Nekaros, Hrickis, Nociduas

Necromantic magic is that which concerns the life force. Technically, this includes most healing magic and many spiritual rituals. However, because such magic is practiced mainly by priests, the field has instead come to refer solely to two of its darker aspects: death spells which drain life force, and the creation and control of the undead.

Demonology
Specialists: Garzahd, Linda

See Demons. Demonological magic attempts to summon, bind, and otherwise manipulate demons, who make powerful servants. It is inherently dangerous, in that the user is pitting his own magical skills against the often considerable skills of a demon, and it is forbidden by the Empire and the Kingdom of Avernum. It does not include exorcism and disruptive spells, which are evocative magic.

Psionics
Specialists: Solberg, Crystal Souls

A relatively demanding field neglected by most magic-users, of which Cheeseball once said: "It's like playing chess, but with hot irons shoved through your mind." Significant psionic magic includes dumbfounding, terror and charm spells, the delusions caused by rakshasi, minddueling, telepathy, and mindreading (a secret of the Vahnatai). Crystal Souls are particularly reliant on the field as they can only communicate through telepathy.

Transformation
Specialists: Erika, Rentar-Ihrno, X

The most complex and difficult of all magical arts, transformation is only undertaken by the greatest archmagi, and then at a tremendous effort. Transformation can permanently alter the structure and form of just about anything, and it is capable of doing so throughout a great area.

When precision is not required, other arts, particularly evocation and stone shaping, can often duplicate its effects more easily. For that reason, transformation is usually used for delicate operations, in particular slight modifications of plants and animals. It has even been used to alter entire species at once.

It was transformative magic that created glowing fungus, fast-growing mushrooms, cavewood, aranea, mutant giants, many of the plagues of Valorim, the sea monsters of Exile, and greater Black Shades. Lesser transformation, such as the creation of automatonic living statues and golems, is more widely practiced by magi.

Enchantment
Known practitioners: X, Enla, Ostoth, Pathass, Sulfras

The production and enchantment of artefacts, or powerful magical items that usually carry a permanent enchantment, is another field which is hard to master. However, this field also has its simpler parts — the enchantment of blades or armor with extra protection or special abilities, and the crafting of less powerful jewelry items like Rings of Shielding. The more powerful and experienced enchanters have little time for such trifles, and instead spend their lives creating legendary objects like blessed athames, the blade Demonslayer or the Orb of Thralni.

Enchantment requires tremendous resources to be successful. For this reason, the Kingdom of Avernum was completely unable to support the craft until after the Empire-Avernum War, when it was able to secure more magical resources from the Empire and the Vahnatai.

Item Crafting
This field extends both to the production of wands and scrolls. Some would extend this field to magical crystals as well, but these have their own classification.

Curses
Most of what this catch-all field covers is any magic targeted at an opponent's abilities. The most simple curse spells sap abilities for only a short time, but more powerful curses (such as the feared Dread Curse) can be permament and difficult - if not impossible - to remove. More exotic curses do not affect a person's abilities. Rather, they specify contingencies that affect the victim if certain conditions are met. The most famous example is the curse bestowed upon Erika by Garzahd that would kill her if she ever came in contact with sunlight.

Crystallomancy
Stone Shaping
Related Skills
Alchemy, by laypersons sometimes believed to be limited to the synthesis of gold or other precious materials, in fact extends to any process by which components are mixed and undergo an alchemical change to form a so-called potion. These potions are usually made to be ingested, but can be quite versatile in their field of application.

These potions are usually made to be ingested, but can be quite versatile in their field of application.

featured

Slithzerikai, or sliths, are a strong and intelligent race of lizard-people. They originated in the caves below Exile. They first encountered humans during the First Expedition, and the results were violent and bloody. Since then, there have been two major slith wars, creatively referred to as the First Slith War and the Second Slith War. Most sliths seen outside of the Bahssikava, excluding those from Gnass, are violent and hostile to humans, although more and more friendly sliths have begun to surface, prompting the Empire to take the largely ceremonial and political step of adding them to their friendly species list.

Appearance
Slithzerikai are reptiles with humanoid characteristics. They have five clawed fingers on each hand and five clawed toes on each foot. They have scaly skin and their eyes are usually colored red (although some have blue eyes.) All sliths have a tail for balance.

Growing to a height of far over two meters (surpassing even three meters in some cases), the slithzerikai are the largest humanoid race in Ermarian apart from the Giants.

Sliths have a life expectancy notably beyond human standards — 150 years or more would be a reasonable estimate. It has been suggested that, like dragons, they never cease to grow; however, their growth rate slows down once they reach about two meters, and only a few live long enough to grow to enormous sizes (such gigantic Sliths are known to exist, however).

Physical Traits
In combat, the great advantage of the sliths is their great size and strength. Their tough skin makes them clumsy and slow, but it also provides them with natural armor against enemy blades. Only a very strong (or very foolish) human would dare to take on a slith in hand-to-hand combat alone.

Their weapon of choice is a gigantic two-tined iron spear about two meters long, that requires enormous strength to wield. That makes it the most efficient in slith hands, allowing their physical advantages to really come into their own.

As reptiles, the sliths are cold-blooded creatures and therefore require much warmth to live. In cold environments, they slow down severely. They become more susceptable to illness when cold, and may even go into a torpor.

As a whole, the slithzerikai are extremely intelligent, and they have a great talent for magic, especially clerical magic. However, intelligence can vary greatly from slith to slith, and a large minority of sliths are raised as utter simpletons.

Language
Sliths, like most sentient species, have developed their own language, fully independent from Imperial Standard, called Slithzerikaiis. Another language, known as Classical Slith or Homeland Slith, is spoken by the Sliths of Bahssikava, and is independent of Slithzerikaiis.

History
Not much is known of the mysterious race of the slithzerikai; almost as little as of the secretive, vengeful Vahnatai, for they come from far below the lands of Exile, and these caverns are no more their home than they are ours. Most Slithzerikai who lived in Exile originally were evil demon-worshippers, hostile to humans and all other races. They were themselves banished from their true homeland, and how it came to this is a long story only the rough details of which have been related to humans.

The Rebellion of Sss-Thoss
Legends tell of a holy empire, where the slithzerikai live in an advanced civilization of peace, knowledge and spirituality. Their homes are not built, but hewn as caverns into the solid bedrock, and their cities reach deep beneath the cave floor. The slithzerikai worshipped many different deities in ancient rituals of meditation and tranquility, and they carved statues in their likeness and honor.

Then, a slith named Sss-Thoss became apostate, and began to serve demons and other darker powers, that commanded him to stir up strife among his race. Through promises of power and wealth, he was able to persuade many others to follow him, and a small civil war ensued.

Sss-Thoss was defeated, and he and his followers were exiled from the slith homeland. They were sent up to the caverns that we now call Exile, and the tunnel they passed through was barred with a steel gate that could not be penetrated by any force.

The Slithzerikai in Exile
Some of the exiled slithzerikai continued to follow Sss-Thoss and his sons after him, and they fought the exiled humans many years later. Their leader Sss-Thsss, grandson of Sss-Thoss, was killed by the humans, and their power has greatly diminished since, although they still threaten humans every once in a while.

The other slithzerikai repented, and sought to regain their right to live in the homeland by whatever means possible.

These slithzerikai founded several settlements in Exile, most famously the city of Gnass and Lost Bahssikava. They were fought by the other slithzerikai, who they called Darklings for their worship of the darker powers. The reformed slithzerikai are at peace with humans, and have many times aided them against the Darklings.

A few of the Darkling sliths found their way to the surface, attacking and conquering several mines, most notably near Golddale in Karnold Province, Valorim.
