Trading is the exchange of one or more goods for a different good or goods of equal value between two parties or individuals. The direct exchange of goods is called bartering, while the exchange of a good for a certain amount of coins is more commonly reffered to as trading.

Domestic Trade
Domestic trade is trade between members of the same country.

Avernite
In Avernum, life is rough. The economy is mostly based upon the mining of various ores and crystals, with various other industries like agriculture, smithing, and magic filling in the gaps.

Six Cities
The largest settlements, the Six Cities, could be argued as representing a different Avernite industry. In Northeastern Exile, Formello with its proximity to the Dragon Motrax in the old days and its library maintains a healthy profit from magic. Meanwhile, Silvar due its location between the Tower Colony and Fort Avernum, the two portal systems of Avernum, is a key trading hub. West of Silvar lies Cotra, a lakeside city that makes a profit off of fishing. South of the Eastern Gallery where these two cities lie is Almaria, which is famous for its wine industry. Blosk, on the other end of the Great Cave is primarily an agricultural venture, growing mushrooms. Lastly, Dharmon near Blosk is in the very profitable business of mining.

Wartime
In Avernum, there is often banditry of all types on the roads, and the kingdom is usually always in some sort of problem. For example, in the days of the First Slith War, bandits, Nephil, and Slithzerikai all roamed the Eastern Gallery, waylaying Avernites. And no sooner had this problem been cleared by Hawthorne's Assassins, than the Empire-Avernum War began and the trade routes became very strained. What's more, the Time of Shades was arguably the worst time for trade, as entire cities would shut down in fear of destruction. As such, during these times, it was only safe to send out adventurers to deliver goods for pay, and the Avernites became phobic of large trade caravans.

Peace Time
However, in times of peace, trade flourishes much more. Merchants and their guards travel the caves, trading goods between cities. Also key to trade is the rivers and lakes, where barges ladden with goods can travel safely at most times and deliver goods from places like the Great Cave directly to remote places like Fort Monastery. Lately, King Starrus set up a new feature for Fort Avernum, that of pylons. These pylons are set up in most settlements of Avernum, and upon traveling to Fort Avernum, one can use them to go to any of the pylons one has visited, and back. This is a revolutionary new idea that will essentially make Fort Avernum a trade hub once the project is released to the public.

Imperial
In the vast Empire of the Surface, things are much different than in Avernum. Since the Empire has spanned across all four continents, it has a wide variety of goods. Thus, the economy focuses centrally on transporting goods from one place to another.

Caravans
The Imperial Army has long since ended banditry in its settled parts, and minor pests like Goblins are quickly and lethally dealt with by adventurers or guards. As such, large caravans of merchants, like travelling cities, wander from city to city, usually staying in a single continent, and trade. These caravans often work in a massive circuit, bringing food from one area to another, collecting ores there to bring to a different place, etc. These caravans often have horses to improve travel time, and are protected by mercenaries. This type of intracontinental trade is very profitable, and is quite important to the economy of the Empire.

Sailor's Association
The Sailor's Association, kept in check by the Imperial Navy is absolutely pivotal to the Imperial economy. The sailors have large seaworthy ships that go between all of the continents of the Surface. Most of these ships travel back and forth between Pralgad and the other continents, delivering ores and foodstuffs from Valorim, spices and gemstones from Vantanas, and textiles and lumber from Aizo. From here, Pralgadians manufacture the raw materials into various goods and ship them back to the other continents for use.

International
International trade is trade between two parties from different nations. As there are only two nations of any note on Ermarian, this usually happens between the Empire and Avernum.

The Surface Portal
The Surface Portal in the Tower Colony of Avernum is the primary source of international trade. From here, the portal takes goods from Avernum to major trade centers across the Empire, and Upper Avernum. These goods, most commonly ores and crystals are then exchanged for Surface goods, ranging from Surface food to magical tomes. Then, the traders return through the Surface Portal and trade the goods with the Avernites. Thus the cycle of trade between nations continues. To capitalize directly on this type of trade, both governments require a fee to be paid to use the portal. This fee also helps maintain the portals, which can be very costly.

Valorim
The other way international trade happens is directly through the Surface. As Avernum has two provinces on the Surface, Upper Avernum and Provincial Avernum, there is the possibility for direct trade between the nations here. Goods from all over Valorim are brought to Krizsan Province and Karnold Province, where they are exchanged with Fort Emergence and the City of Dawn respectively. Here they are bought by the Avernites, and goods like ores, mushrooms, magical research, are sold back to the Imperial citizens. Like use of the Surface Portal, going back and forth between the Empire and Provincial Avernum or Upper Avernum has a fee.

Outposts
Some time after the Time of Shades, the Empire established three diplomatic outposts, one in the Great Cave, one in the Eastern Gallery, and one near the Northern Frontier. These were essentially the Empire's embassies to Avernum in Exile, just as Provincial Avernum was essentially the embassy to the Empire. In order to foster positive relations with the Avernites, as well as the sheer expense of the project, Empress Prazac I encouraged building material to be purchased from the Avernites. The portals linking the three settlements with the Surface are also of importance to trade between the nations, with goods from the Surface being brought down cheaper than through the Surface Portal. Most is used by the Imperial Army, but surplus sometimes finds its way into the hands of the Avernites.
During the Skylark Curse, Marralis was hit the hardest of the three cities in the Vale, and surpassed only by the village of Ptolm. Completely dependent on agriculture for its survival, once the riverwater poisons reached them, the city suffered complete economic failure. The crops soon became sickly, and most died. Furthering the devastation, the diseased waters thinned the population. The survivors mostly abandoned the city to its fate, fleeing either from Skylark completely via Fort Talrus, or headed to better grounds, like nearby Blinlock. Only one family remained in the city, providing precious, if sickly, crops for the rest of the Vale.
For most of its history, Skylark Vale has been a peacful, if somewhat remote, corner of the Empire. Then, under the reign of Emperor Stewart I, the Skylark School of Magery was shut down somewhat violently. Nearly a century later, magical wastes begin poisoning the river, and the Skylark Curse began. First, crops, beasts, and children began dieing. Second, there was an unofficial evacuation by the richer of the inhabitants of the Vale. This trend continued for six years, in which the Vale continued suffering silently. Finally, adventurers managed to use Quickfire to destroy most of the toxins in the school, and new poisons stopped flowing into the river. Attention brought to the condition of the Vale, the Empire enforced a mandatory evacuation of the Vale, cured the diseased, and after much work cleansed the river. Since then, the refugees have moved back into the Vale, and it is once again a peacful, prosperous trading post of Pralgad.

Krizsan Province is a province of the Empire on Valorim, the most recently settled area of the continent. To the west of the province is Karnold Province, and to the north of the province is the Isle of Bigail. The capital of the Province is, unsurprisingly, Krizsan.

Population
The population of Krizsan Province has the least amount of citizens living there, as it has still not been properly developed. There are six hundred thousand citizens living in Krizsan Province, mostly in Krizsan city.

Racial Makeup
The racial mixture of Krizsan Province is mostly nephil and humans, with some slithzerikai living in the Pergies region. There are eighty percent humans, eighteen percent nephil, and two percent other, mostly slithzerikai and goblins.

Literacy and Languages
Just under half of the Imperial citizens over the age of fifteen can read and write. The only major language spoke in Krizsan Province is Imperial Standard.

Economy
Though there are fertile soils and dense forests in Krizsan Province, these have as of yet been untapped. Instead, the ores in the Pergha mountains, worked by the miners at Pergies, are the primary export from Krizsan Province. The goods are carried south by merchants to Delis and Delan, who then transport them to Krizsan where they are shipped north.

As Krizsan Province holds the only entrance to Upper Avernum, it became a trading center. Goods from all over Valorim are sent to Farport and Krizsan, where they are sent to the Inn of Blades, and then to Fort Emergence.

History
Krizsan Province was the final section of Valorim officially incorporated into the Empire, and as such has a relatively short history.

Settlement
During the Nephilim Wars that overshadowed the settlement of Valorim, General Gabor Krizsan, Dervish Field Commander of the Imperial Army, fought in this region. In honor of his many successes, the province and its capital were named in his honor. Unsurprisingly, for this he became a hero to the inhabitants of the province.

After the Nephilim Wars were completed, more settlers came to the region. The city of Krizsan experienced a population jump, and other settlements formed and grew as well, among these the legendary Inn of Blades, which was a safehaven from the nephil during the Wars.

Plagues
During the Plagues of Valorim, magical slimes attacked Krizsan Province. While they were no small task in killing, they were, in perspective, seen as the weakest of the six Plagues. The slimes roamed around the province, burning farmland, killing farm animals, killing lone travellers, destroying Colchis, attacking Silvar and Krizsan, and generally causing chaos. Though the Imperial Army did what it could, due to the Quarantine of Valorim, little could be done to destroy the source of the Plague.

Eventually, the Avernite Surface Explorers travelled to Krizsan, and were tasked with destroying the Slime Plague by the mayor at the time, Arbuckle. After infiltrating the Agate tower and killing Bojar, they found the location of the Slime Pit. Reportedly, the assaulted the Pit, and killed the creator of the slimes, some sort of Alien slime.

Settlements and Geographical Features
The settlements of Krizsan Province are, from north to south:

* Farport
* Inn of Blades
* Pergies

Stonehurst is the capital of Aizo, and is located in the northeastern part of the continent.

Imperial Dominion
The Imperial Governor of Aizo resides in Stonehurst, and commands a great deal of power. Unlike the more wild Vantanas, the Imperial Governor actually controls the majority of the continent, due to the strong trade between Pralgad and Aizo, giving rise to a large presence of the Imperial Army and Imperial Navy.

Population
Stonehurst, without a doubt, is the largest city in Aizo, and matched in sheer numbers only by the metropolies of Pralgad, like Imperius and Solaria. Over four million citizens and travellers were in the Stonehurst region during the last Imperial Census. Of these, only a small percent were traders, adventurers, or other travelers.

Racial Makeup
Due to xenophobic attitudes, there are not many Non-Humans in Stonehurst, and of those that are, the overwhelming majority are Nephil. There are roughly one hundred Slithzerikai in the city, and six thousand Nephil in the city and farmlands of Stonehurst.

On the other hand, the overwhelming majority of Stonehurst are humans. Of these humans, fourty percent are Pralgadian, a high percent for Aizo, and the rest are ethnic Aizoan.

Languages and Literacy
Meanwhile, being on the continent of Aizo, the birhtplace of the Aizoan Empire, there are more languages than just the Pralgadian Imperial Standard. These include:
* Aizoim
* Ancient Aizoan and Soruharva, among scholarly groups and mages respectively

Literacy wise, there is again a higher amount than usual in the city of Stonehurst. Over seventy percent of adults over fifteen can read and write.

Economy
As the largest port in all of Aizo, Stonehurst as essential to intercontinental trade. Fine quality textiles and exotic woods, as well as many varieties of ore, are brought into the Pralgadian markets via caravans to Stonehurst. Here, the Sailor's Association trades them for manufactured goods from Pralgad and food from Valorim, before taking the Aizoan goods to Pralgad for refining.
After the Kingdom of Avernum was established, the three pieces were eventually found again by Hawthorne's Assassins] and reforged by Boutell.
The Mertis Spiral has no economy, as there are no settlements in the Spiral and no natural resources either.

Geography
The Mertis Spiral is a series of twisting, icy tunnels east of Mertis, south of Silvar, and north of the Tower Colony, in Honeycomb Province of the Kingdom of Avernum. There are no settlements in the Spiral itself, only Mertis west of the Spiral.

History
The history of the Mertis Spiral is categorized into two Plagues caused by the death of members of the First Expedition. These plagues consist of sending swarms of undead towards the unwisely placed settlement, Mertis.

First Expedition
When the Empire found the caves of Exile, they first sent down the First Expedition, to determine its worth as part of the Empire. Very early on, the Expedition split into several groups for unknown reasons. One particular group was pursued by hostile Slithzerikai, and fought a running battle into the Mertis Spiral. Despairing, a magic barrier was erected by a mage to prevent the Sliths from getting to them. However, the group was unable to dispel the barrier, and starved to death. Their spirits haunted the Mertis Spiral for many years.

First Mertis Plague
After the Founding of Avernum, Mertis was soon established unknowingly near this cursed area. Soon, hordes of undead started wandering into the city, and the guards had difficulty keeping them out. The Avernite Army did little to help, due to their fighting in the First Slith War, but eventually Hawthorne's Assassins infiltrated the Mertis Spiral, and killed many of the undead. Eventually, they found the cause of the problem, and not being particularily powerful in terms of priestly powers, they could do nothing to stop it.

Second Mertis Plague
When the Empire-Avernum War started up, the undead rose again. The village continued suffering silently, until the Empire War Heroes came to the Mertis Spiral. Like the other adventurers before them, they infiltrated through, and eventually saw the scene of death. This group of adventurers however, was stronger, and successfully cleansed the curse by using the Ritual of Sanctification.

The caves of Upper Exile in the Pergha mountains were settled after the Empire-Avernum War ended, and are accessible from Exile only by the Surface Portal in Tower Colony.

Population
The population, consisting only of resident Avernites and not Imperial traders, is large for a province of its size in the Kingdom of Avernum, but still smaller than the Eastern Gallery or Great Cave. There are an estimated five hundred thousand Avernites living in Upper Avernum.

Economy
The economy of Upper Avernum is absolutely essential to the Kingdom of Avernum. Imperial merchants, paying a small fee to go through Fort Emergence, either trade goods with the merchants there, or continue on to Portal Fortress, and a few as far as the Tower Colony. Spices and gemstones from Vantanas, ores and food from Valorim, textiles and lumber from Aizo, and manufactured goods from Pralgad come to these three places, most often Portal Fortress or Fort Emergence, as there is a fee to use the Surface Portal to get to the Tower Colony, and there the goods are traded with Avernite crystals and ores. The traders here then send a small portion of the goods to New Cotra and New Formello, while the majority of the goods are taken down the Surface Portal to Tower Colony, where merchants from all over Avernum trade for them.

History
Though Upper Avernum has only been a province of the Kingdom of Avernum for a short time, it played a pivotal role in the reconciliation of Avernum and the Empire.

Discovery and Settlement
Upper Avernum was discovered during the Empire-Avernum War, but due to the war no attempt was made to colonize it. Once the war had concluded, mages in the Tower of Magi were able to construct a portal linking the two cave systems. This was kept secret from the general public for a time, while the army went up and built the basic framework for two essential forts, Portal Fortress protecting the Surface Portal, and Fort Emergence protecting the way to the Surface.

Before they could finish however, news leaked as the the work being done in the Pergha mountains, and King Micah had no other option but to let through waves of screened settlers, volunteers, and colonists. Portal Fortress became a strong city for the settlers, and many Avernites eager to be near the Surface went to For Emergence. Meanwhile, two non-military sites, New Cotra and New Formello were set up to the north of Portal Fortress. The Vahnatai, supposedly eager to see the Avernites off to the Surface, established the settlement of Ghikra accross a lake from New Formello. Ghikra was actually a base for Rentar-Ihrno to create the Plagues of Valorim.

Surface Exploration and Reconciliation
Soon after the construction of Portal Fortress and Fort Emergence, the First Surface Explorers were selected by the Crown from Unspecified Services to explore the Surface and make contact with the Empire. They were relatively famous adventurers in Avernum beforehand, and they were expected to be met with great successs. All of them, with the exception of Tucker, died in southern Valorim. Worried, Anaximander soon recruited less experienced adventurers, the more famous of the two parties, and sent them into Krizsan Province.

The Second Surface Explorers one by one managed to destroy the sources of the Plagues, from slimes, to cockroaches, to Troglodytes and Giants in southern Valorim. In northern Valorim, they destroyed the Tower of Shifting Floors and Crumbling factory, where the Plagues of Golems and Alien beasts were respectively being created. Then, the Surface Explorers identified the Vahnatai as the creater of the Plagues, causing the Vahnatai to evacuate Ghikra. In Blackcrag Fortress, the Surface Explorers met with Empress Prazac I, and between Anaximander and the Empress, they negotiated a deal for Provincial Avernum. After removing Rentar-Ihrno from Valorim, at the cost of Erika Redmark's life, the Kingdom of Avernum gained Provincial Avernum.

Cult of the Sacred Item
For a time, the Cult of the Sacred Item held caves in the northern extreme of Upper Avernum, connected only by a river. Here, they raided settlements across the Kingdom of Avernum, making minor thefts of magical items via portal. The Cult eventually stole the Orb of Thralni from Fort Emergence. Enraged, Anaximander of Unspecified Services tasked the Surface Explorers with the recovery of the Orb. The Surface Explorers were forced to go to Seles, who temporarily redirected the Surface Portal at the Portal Fortress to the Cultist Caves. The Cultists were, for the most part, destroyed and scattered to the winds, the northern caves being abandoned.

* Lorelei
* Softport

Use
Since Lake Tomor has rivers flowing all of northern Valorim, it has become essential for trading of all sorts. Raw materials are brought from Monroe Province and Footracer Province by boat, and shipped through Bengaro to Lorelei, where some are bought and manufactured directly. Meanwhile, the Sailor's Association sends foreign goods from other continents, most notably Pralgad, through Softport to Lorelei, and here most of the trading occurs. This has had the unintentional consequence of making Lorelei rich, and being able to exert a certain amount of influence over the other provinces by threatening to seal off goods.

Meanwhile, this network of rivers is also very beneficial to the Imperial Navy and Imperial Army. More than once the waterways were essential to putting down the natives like the Ratbane Clan during the settlement of Valorim. Lately, its military use has dwindled to stomping down the occasional rebellion in the wilderness of northern Valorim.
New Formello is a settlement of Upper Avernum, nestled in a cave system under the Pergha mountains. The city was named after the prominent Avernum settlement, Formello. The city is north of New Cotra, the northernmost settlement in all of Upper Avernum.

History
New Formello has not been a city for long, so it has a rather brief history.

Settlement
When the Surface Portal was created in Upper Exile, Portal Fortress and Fort Emergence were among the first settlement to be built. When the military had finished necessary construction, colonists, settlers, and volunteers were allowed to use the portal, and established two cities north of Portal Fortress, New Formello and New Cotra. Of the two, New Formello was the less settled of the two, partially because of constant chitrach raids. These were eventually ended by the Surface Explorers, and the city started to grow again.

Murderings
Later, around the time that the Surface Explorers had started destroying the first Plagues on the Surface of Valorim, New Formello experienced a cavequake. Two workers in the caves to the north of the settlement were killed, by activating a magical trap in which chitrachs attacked them. The Surface Explorers once again returned to the settlement to solve the deaths, and found a hidden passage leading further into the caves. They activated more such traps, and eventually reached a dead end with an unknown corpse with a key. The key was later found to be to essential to destroying the Alien beasts breeding area, where the Vahnatai bred them to destroy Footracer Province, and intendedly all of Valorim.

Economy
The main industries of New Formello are farming and mining, but these are relatively minor.

Population
Although started as a small settlement, after the Reconciliation of the Empire and Avernum, the population skyrocketed over night. At current times, there are estimated to be fifty thousand Avernites in New Formello, still making it the smallest settlement in Upper Avernum.
The Empire is the largest nation on the surface of Ermarian, and has been the only known one throughout most of the history of the planet. Spanning all four continents at the Present Day, its size is unparalleled.

In its history, the Empire has once been refounded. To distinguish, the first Empire is sometimes referred to as the Aizoan Empire, while the second is the Pralgadian Empire. However, both refer (or referred, in the case of the former) to themselves as simply "The Empire". Since the Aizoan Empire collapsed nearly a thousand years ago, the information below is concerned entirely with the one in Pralgad.

Factbook Entry
Background
The first Empire is believed to have been founded several centuries pre-Imperial Era. The first surviving record, however, dates from Emperor Zion I of Aizo, who ascended the throne in 250 Before Pralgad. After the Empire collapsed in 100 BP, the heir of the last emperor (growing up in Exile on Pralgad) founded the Pralgadian Empire in 0 IE, which has lasted to this day, outlasting minor civil wars and natural disasters. The continent of Aizo was retaken by the Pralgadian Empire at the beginning of the third century IE; Valorim was discovered and conquered in the seventh century. Vantanas has never been properly settled; the dangerous island has so far kept away all but treasure-seekers and adventurers, but recently it has experienced somewhat of a population boom.
As there is only one Empire in Ermarian (for the Kingdom of Avernum see there), "Emperor" always refers to one of the rulers of this realm. An Emperor reigns until he dies or resigns to let his crown prince take the throne.

Inheritance
Emperors cease to use their given names upon ascending the throne. They may still be referred to by their full names in some ceremonies, but this is rare. For most purposes they are known solely by the name of their house, and their number in the dynasty (thus, Sol IV is the fourth emperor of the House Sol).

Deep down in the lower caves, on the very rim of the slithzerikai homeland, the province of Chimney is largely unknown to the world. Its unique climate supports trade in metal and herbs amid squabbling city-states.

Climate and Geography
A textbook on cave geography describes the area as follows:
:::The lands of Chimney give an interesting lesson on meteorology. The human settlements are actually placed on a ledge high up on the wall of the slithzerikai homeland. These caves provide just the warm, damp environment that cold blooded lizards enjoy, considerably warmer than the caves of central Exile, high above.

:::At a point in the cave ceiling above the Chimney ledge, there is a wide opening. This tunnel connects to the caves above, forming a vertical chute, two thousand meters high. The warm air that rises from the slith jungles is sucked into the chute, causing a continuous breeze through the human lands. The draft functions like a pipe, thus giving Chimney its name. Moreover, when the damp airstream encounters the cold air of Exile, it often releases its watery content, producing a peculiar effect: Indoor rain. This makes the soil of Chimney very fertile.

At the north end of Chimney, the Howling Gap is a juncture between Chimney and Brattaskar, the long, narrow tunnel that leads to Northeastern Exile. There are also tunnels near the Howling Gap leading to nearby nephilim lands, and to the slithzerikai homeland below Chimney. Several rivers run through Chimney proper, and roughly divide it into four regions.

Myld Isle, also known as the Rainlands, is in the center of Chimney. It is not an island, but is so named for the river Myld which bounds it. The Rainlands are home to what is probably the largest forest in all of Exile; they are unruly lands. Myldres, capital of Chimney, is located on the west edge of the isle. The former capital, Lushwater Toll, is located at the north end, along the road that connects to the Howling Gap and Brattaskar.

To the east lie the lands of Milestone, rich in metals. Milestone is a heavy mining area, characterized by twisting tunnels and poor mining towns. It is also the location of the famous Milestone Casino.

To the west lie the lands of Whitstone, rich in marble. These lands have been abandoned since the destruction of the town of Whitstone. The town is located in the middle of what is now called the Marble Lake.

Finally, in the south lie the Shadowlands. The few southern settlements all cluster around Flickering Keep, which itself sits on the edge of the Dividing Wall that separates Chimney from the slith lands. Elsewhere along the wall, Fort Outlook sits at the top of the Long Stairs that provide a hazardous road between the two lands.

Economy
Chimney's economy consists of mining and selling metal to the the slithzerikai, in exchange for herbs from the lizard jungles. This sustains a modest trade with Formello, the nearest town in Exile. The main trade route stretches from the Long Stairs, and goes up rivers to the Milestone mines. It continues northwest, past Lushwater Toll and the Howling Gap, and along Brattaskar road, eventually reaching Exile proper.

History
:Main article: History of Chimney

Chimney was originally claimed as a hideout by the bandit Harfloot. Years later, miners settled in Chimney, and Harfloot and his descendants moved from robbery to extortion to taxation and government. Different settlements sprang up with their own local lords, and shortly after the Empire-Avernum War a civil war erupted. The war was eventually squashed by the cunning nephil Groul. A decade later, Groul attempted to seize total control of Chimney in a complicated strategem that relied on provoking an uprising among the sliths. After stirring up turmoil throughout Chimney and the slithzerikai homeland, Groul failed, and the priestess Karolynna was installed as Chimney's ruler.

Settlement by Harfloot
A few years after the failure of the First Expedition, when the Empire had abandoned its plans to utilize the newly discovered caves, a small-time bandit leader named Harfloot decided that the caves would make a great hideout. He took his band into the caves, and went as far away from the Empire as he could get, which brought them to Chimney. The bandits found easy plunder in the nearby nephilim lands, and they settled down in a fortress on a hill, sometimes called Harfloot Castle.

After Exile was settled, a few other humans trickled into Chimney, mostly to open mines. Harfloot became quite wealthy by preying on trade routes. The merchants soon got used to paying taxes for unfettered passage. Meanwhile, Harfloot's men cleared out the monsters who inhabited the area. Myld Isle in particular became much more inhabitable.

After Harfloot died, his son took over. Harfloot the Younger was less inclined to banditry, but was a cunning businessman. He built up roads and bridges, and established guardposts along Brattaskar Road. Soon, instead of receiving tribute under threat, he received tolls to protect travellers from other bandits. A trading post sprang up around the hilltop fortress, called Lushwater Toll.

Civil war
As Exile's population grew, so did Chimney's. Clusters of villages in the east, west, and south gave rise to local lords. Rodovan Zerr built the Milestone Casino. Trade developed with the slithzerikai, and Lushwater Toll, too, grew into a real town. Control of the area passed on to Yim Harfloot, grandson of the original Harfloot, an ineffective leader who seemed to have lost all traces of his opportunistic, bandit heritage.

When the Empire-Avernum War ended, Chimney was a prosperous and unthreatened land. The other lords grew tired of the profit that Lushwater Toll extracted from them, and in 826 IE, Chimney collapsed into a heap of bickering city-states. While town militias fought, trade and food became uncertain, general unrest spread quickly, and bandits once again had free reign of the land.

In 827 IE, a band of nephilim known as the Cat Paws, led by a nephil known as Groul, made a pact with a fraction of the nobles of Myldres. With their backing, he led a stunning series of conquests. Lushwater Toll was ashamed to be the first to fall, to a sudden, wild attack by nephilim. With Harfloot out of the picture, Groul's noble allies seized control of the north end of Chimney's trade routes. They then threatened Milestone was a trade blockade, refusing its merchants passage across the river Myld. The town, ruled more by money than by any lord, was quick to surrender.

Armed with supplies from the mines, the nephilim marched south. They laid siege to Flickering Keep in the Shadowlands. Mysteriously backed by the power of a drake lord, the Cat Paws were able to climb along the abyss at the back of the keep and storm it most unexpectedly from behind. Its ruler, Lord Fray, was killed.

The Cat Paws then marched on Whitstone, the last free city. Before they could attack, however, the cave ceiling over Whitstone collapsed. Half the people of the town were killed, including its master, Lord White. The cave-in caused the river to flood, and the rest of the town was abandoned in ruins.

Myldres emerged as the undisputed ruler of Chimney. Commander Groul shared power there with one of his noble allies, Ottar, who became the Mayor of Myldres and the official ruler of Chimney. For another nine years, peace reigned.

Groul's coup and the Yvoss-tai uprising
Inspired by the gains that Avernum was able to secure in the wake of the Empire-Avernum War and especially the Reconciliation, despite being far weaker than the other nations it fought, Commander Groul devised an elaborate scheme to seize power in Chimney. He contracted with a vahnatai businessman, Verundis, to obtain a magical portal, as well as a powerful bomb, Thunder Rock.

In 836 IE, Groul used the portal to travel to the slithzerikai homeland. Posing as a mysterious divinity called the Masked Aide (later "revealed" to be Zahr, the god of true warriors), Groul egged a discontent Yvoss-tai worker, Sss-Chross, into staging a revolution against the dominant Ssara-tai warrior caste. The Yvoss-tai, unlike the Ssara-tai, were not allowed to touch iron. Groul used this taboo to manipulate Sss-Chross into attacking Chimney, convincing him that he would need to secure Chimney's bronze mines in order to supply his forces with weapons.

Groul used the threat of invasion as an excuse to quarrel with Mayor Ottar over the right course of action. He baited Ottar into throwing him and his Cat Paws out of Myldres. Groul's plan was to have the Cat Paws swoop in at the last moment, using his secret power over Sss-Chross to make it appear as if the Cat Paws single-handedly saved Chimney from the invasion.

To ensure his plan's success, he needed to prevent any Avernite reinforcements from pre-empting his role as savior. For that purpose, he told Sss-Chross that he would provide a powerful artifact -- the Thunder Rock -- for the Yvoss-tai forces to find, at the Howling Gap. The detonation of Thunder Rock would seal the area with rubble, preventing any support from Exile. But first, slith troops would destroy the human outposts than lined Brattaskar Road, to prevent news from leaking too soon to Avernum.

Unfortunately for Groul, a small group of soldiers from one of these outposts escaped the sliths who attacked them, and made their way to the Howling Gap. With help from Karolynna, a priestess who had been captured by the Yvoss-tai, the soldiers stole Thunder Rock before it could be detonated, and fled south. News of their deed spread and they quickly gained fame as the Heroes of Brattaskar.

Groul tried to turn this setback into an advantage, and manipulated the soldiers into participating in the assassinations of both Sss-Chross (via Groul's own portal) and the Yvoss-tai ambassador to Myldres, Sss-Varbas. He then incited the Yvoss-tai into making an ambitious and risky offense against Myld Isle, from their position at the Howling Gap. The Chimney army met the sliths and, just as Groul had planned, the Cat Paws outflanked the sliths after the battle had already begun, turning the tides and ending the invasion. The Yvoss-tai suffered heavy casualties, and without Sss-Chross and Zahr, the entire revolt fell apart.

Myldres celebrated the victory, which was once again attributed to the Cat Paws. With the Chimney army decimated, Groul stood poised to take over Chimney. His plans were undone, however, by the Heroes of Brattaskar. While employed by Groul, they had discovered evidence of his dealings with Verundis and Sss-Chross. Working with Karolynna, they had also defeated and captured Rashtarra, a haakai who Groul had used to destroy Whitstone (with the cave-in) and Flickering Keep (as the drake lord) during the civil war. When they released Rashtarra to tell his story, he went after Groul and sucked him into the demon realm.

At the suggesiton of the Heroes of Brattaskar, a very surprised Karolynna was named Mayor of Chimney -- an uncharacteristically selfless and honest one.
