A few years later, the Empire attacked the troglodytes as part of the [[Extermination of Non-Humans]]. Unlike the giants, the troglodytes were well armed, intelligent and they had powerful magic users. They took over the Empire mines near [[Solaria]] and used the iron to make steel armor and weapons for use against the Empire. They captured villages and farms and expanded thier base of operations.

In 384 [[IE]], the Empire took control of the mines, cutting the troglodytes off from their lands, preventing reinforcments or supplies from reaching them. In 386 IE, the Empire soldiers who defended the mines burst into troglogyte territory, and killed all of the troglodytes.

Unicorns

[[Unicorns]] are ill-tempered animals resembling small horses, distinguished by their gray hides and the single sharp horn that protrudes from their foreheads. They stand about four feet tall. Although commonly supposed to be stupid, evidence such as unicorn cave paintings suggests that the creatures are far from unintelligent.

They are known as vicious, annoying pests on the [[surface]], where their speed, pugnaciousness, and high birth rate has allowed them to endure the [[Empire]]'s attempts at the [[Extermination of Non-Humans]] better than many other races.

== White Unicorns ==

White unicorns are a very rare variety of unicorn. They are peaceful, benevolent, and imbued with powerful magic.

These good unicorns carry the living embodiment of nature wherever they go. Where unicorns live, grass will grow, because they will it -- even underground. Nonetheless, white unicorns prefer to live on the surface.

This unicorn spirit can often be felt by others near such a unicorn. Simply being in the presence of a unicorn makes some people feel warm and serene. Similarly, when a white unicorn is slain, there is a horrible price that must be paid. The creatures who killed it are afflicted by a permanent magical weakness.

This magical spirit is centered in the [[unicorn horn|unicorn's horn]]. To their kind, the horn is sacred; a white unicorn cannot be laid to rest without it. To others, however, the horn is a much-sought after magical reagent of some power. Unicorns, and their horns, have powerful healing properties which are magical in nature.

Because of their intensely magical nature, white unicorns were hunted especially fiercely by the [[Empire]]. Many have been slain or forced into hiding; thus, white unicorns are among the most rarified of all races, second only to [[dragons]].

[[Dragons]] are solitary, winged [[reptiles]] with unmatched might, great knowledge, and lives that span many centuries. They were hunted by the [[Empire]] and are now nearly extinct.

== Appearance ==

Dragons look something like very large, winged [[lizards]]. They have a long, sinewy body which they sometimes coil up in the manner of a snake.

A dragon's stature varies not only with its age, but also with its power, and in particular, the size of its hoard. Dragons are covered in scales, generally of green and red hue. The scales of a fully-grown dragon are very difficult to pierce, and can withstand extreme temperatures and strong magical forces. They are often sought by enchanters as a powerful source of [[Magic#Enchantment|enchantment]].

On a very remote island south of the continent of [[Valorim]] there is an active volcano where Wingless Dragons are known to exist. These dragons are shorter than their flying cousins and have small, stumpy arms.

== Magical Traits ==

Dragons are capable of projecting terror and confusion, and generally clouding the minds of any lesser creatures who approach them. This clouding is probably responsible for the fact that the same dragon is often reported to be different sizes and genders by each [[human]] who encounters him or her.

Fiery breath is the most celebrated and most feared ability of dragonkind. Few creatures can survive the flames.

Dragons have a natural ability to manipulate the forces of [[magic]]. Although they can master arts such as spell casting, their most powerful magic is innate, and cannot be taught. Such dragon magic is usually put to more subtle ends than humanoid magery, ends fitting the introverted nature of the dragon. For example, the magics that alter the dragon's form, nourish it on a diet not at all proportional to its size, and protect its hoard are all inherent to its race.

One area in which dragon magic is uniquely strong is [[scrying]]. Dragons can practice clairvoyance and clairaudience at distances untenable to even the greatest of [[mage]]s.

== Behavior and Personality ==

Despite their tremendous size and their many predatorial advantages, dragons are not active predators. Indeed, they usually prefer to avoid the lesser races altogether. Though they will sometimes keep [[fire lizards]] or other [[reptiles]] as pets, most reside far afield from the troublesome clamor of other talking creatures.

By nature, dragons are strong-minded recluses. Perhaps because of this introversion, neither heredity nor upbringing shapes a dragon's personality the way it does for many sentient creatures, and even dragons from the same brood may have little in common. Some seek power, while others seek wisdom or simple peace. Some befriend [[humans]], while others see them as prey, or as creatures to be exploited.

All dragons, however, are proud. They are not stupid, and few will allow pride to compromise their continued existence. But they are champion grudge-holders. A dragon who has been wronged will find a way to take revenge. And with such a long life, he can afford to be very patient.

== History ==

Dragons were once spread across the surface of Ermarian. However, when the [[Empire]] began exterminating magical creatures, dragons quickly became one of their most important targets, due to their power and the impossibility of controlling them. Because dragons mate infrequently, the campaign literally decimated their population. It is estimated that fewer than 20 dragons survived it, using their magic to conceal themselves underground.

Around 830 [[IE]], [[Athron]] mothered a brood of hatchlings on the surface of [[Valorim]]. This is believed to be the only new brood in many centuries.

=== Dragons of Exile ===

There were five dragons, all from the same brood, who dwelt in [[Exile]] and nearby caverns for many centuries. The dragons had been around since before the last [[Resting]] of the [[Vahnatai]], though how much earlier is unclear. The five dragons were [[Motrax]] the kindly, [[Sulfras]] the strong, [[Pyrog]] the cruel, [[Khoth]] the wise, and [[Athron]] the reclusive.

Though all dragons distrust humans and hate the [[Empire]] for its crusades against them, these siblings experienced protracted persecution. [[Pyrog]] was slain and [[Motrax]] mortally wounded in human attacks, while [[Sulfras]] and [[Khoth]] were tricked and enslaved by archmage and commander [[Garzahd]].

During the first century after [[human]]s began to live in the caves, each of the surviving dragons fled the area. [[Athron]] gave birth to a new brood, while [[Sulfras]] and [[Khoth]] plotted revenge against the [[Empire]].

Goblins

The goblin is one of the most numerous [[humanoids|humanoid]] creatures in the known world, outnumbered only by [[Humans]]. It is believed that the goblin population was once even larger than it is today. However, their numbers decreased as the [[Empire]] settled more and more of the land, and as the [[Avernites]] drove evil creatures from the [[caves]], and the remaining survivors were eventually forced to make smaller communities in the more sparsely populated areas of Ermarian.

==Appearance==

Goblins are, according to legend, short, green-skinned creatures, which rarely reach five feet in height. They have short sharp fangs and glowing red eyes, which are brilliantly suited to their subterranean homes

==Skills==

The goblin is renowned for its stupidity and cowardice, and many are captured by other races to serve as slaves. Races known to take advantage of goblins in this way include the [[Nephilim]] and [[Nepharim]] and the [[Giants]]. Goblins behave with the intelligence of human children â€“ throwing rocks at invaders and laying flawed traps. They are also incapable of coherent conversation and, as indicated by various reports, communicate through a series of grunts and barks. Goblins are physically very weak and so cannot fight their captors, but do sometimes breed wolves and [[worgs]] as a defense.

Not all goblins fit the mould of being stupid and weak, and some grow up to become fighters, stronger than their peers and skilled with blades. Very few gain some grasp on minor [[magic|magical]] cantrips, and become [[shamans]]. It is unclear where goblin shamans learn their magical skills, but it could well be a mixture of nature lore, imitation from [[mages]] and [[priests]] of other races, or from stolen [[magical texts]] (goblins are not [[literacy|literate]] as a rule). However, many inexperienced adventurers and travellers have sorely underestimated the power of these weak magic users and lived (or not) to regret it.

==Technology==

Goblins are arguably the least skilled craftsmen in the world. They do not build their own dwellings; preferring to settle in ruins already abandoned by others. They wear sub-standard leather armour and wield stone daggers. Some mages have been known to user captured goblins as labourers especially in [[Avernum]] or largely unsettled places, where workers are scarce. Goblins, unable to produce most goods for themselves, are notorious scavengers of equipment and valuables. The shamans of the [[tribes]] sometimes carry [[magical wands]] with them, and some tribal leaders even carry metal swords.

==Culture==

A point of interest are the [[religion|religious]] views of goblins. While the goblins lack any semblance of originality in culture and industry, they have tribal customs and commonly revere their ancestors - a small goblin village near [[Fort Emergence]] is reported to have included both a shrine and a graveyard for respected leaders. Some goblin tribes build shrines to [[demons]] that they happen to live close to. Whether they do this of their own volition, or the demon achieves a degree of mind control over the weak creatures is not known.

==Behavior==

Goblins like to find strong allies to protect them - these will usually employ them as menial laborers or meatshields. They have been reported to live in a kind of symbiotic relationship with [[Nephilim]] or human bandits. One example of these were based in the Fort Emergence area of [[Upper Avernum]], where they were allied with the [[Cult of the Sacred Item]], an Avernite cult dedicated to collecting [[magical artefacts]].

Concerning the intelligence of goblins, it appears that they are nearly all illiterate, but a few of them are able to write after a fashion. The literacy of goblins is comparable to that of [[giants]], and both can write crude signs that are decipherable with some effort. They use the same alphabet and language as humans, indicating perhaps that any language they might possess is imitated behaviour that is learned from humans that the goblins have encountered.

The following names appear to be of goblin origin: Akbug, Argav, Makdur, Griga, Corbakl, Glovd, Progl. It is not known to which sex each of the names belongs.

They are highly intelligent, magical creatures. Some have a paralyzing touch. Nagas have a natural inclination to the study of dark [[magic]]al arts. For this reason, they have occasionally been known to collude with [[Empire]] and [[vahnatai]] [[mages]] on evil projects.

== Habitat ==

Nagas prefer to live in caves. They prefer to eat meat, and will sometimes use their magic and intelligence to demand tribute from weaker [[humanoids]] such as [[goblins]].
