The [[Skylark School of Magery]] was one of the most famous [[magic school]]s in [[Pralgad]]. It was ordered closed by Imperial edict and sealed in 762 [[IE]]. Nearly 100 years later, in 842 [[IE]], [[Skylark Vale]] was struck by an epidemic. Humans, plants and animals suffered from an unknown disease or poisoning. A group of [[adventurers]] was sent to the Vale to find and remove the source.

The school also has a secret rear entrance, leading to a small cave.

Under orders of Emperor [[Stewart I]] the School was to be closed and sealed within the span of only two weeks. The school's head archmage [[Vinya]], a strong Empire loyalist, enforced these orders ruthlessly. Vinya was advised that the deadline of two weeks was too short to safely abandon the school. In response, as evidence unearthed by the adventurers reveals, Vinya first threatened the opponents of the deadline and later had several of them murdered.

The School is to be permanently sealed, and all students and faculty are to return to Empire custody.<br>Anyone interfering with the carrying out of this order will be disciplined in the most severe way. ==Resident Creatures==
Rumors tell that the [[adventurers]] encountered a wide range of hostile creatures, like evil [[gremlins]], [[alien beasts]], and [[chitrachs]], but also helpful creatures, like [[Spiders#Giant Intelligent Friendly Talking Spiders|spiders]] and even a [[dragons|dragon]].

==The Cure==
The symptoms afflicting the Vale were caused by toxic waste that remained in the abandoned complex. In the haste of closing the school the disposal facility was left filled with hazardous waste that should have been neutralized by [[Quickfire]] using the facility's built-in cleansing mechanism. The barrels containing the waste corroded over the next century, leaking into a subterranean tributary of the river that runs through Skylark Vale. The contaminated river water then poisoned humans, livestock and crops that lay downstream of the abandoned school.

By triggering the cleansing mechanism and releasing the Quickfire, the adventurers were able to neutralize the toxic waste and stop further contamination. Although the poison that remains in the ground would affect the crops for many years to come, the waste has slowly been diluted since then, causing a lessening of the Curse that lies on the vale.

==The Present==
The School of Magery remains abandoned and has not been entered since the adventurers explored it. The Imperial edict that ordered it closed was never revoked.

Revan: tests

Hello,

I'm a long time [[Spiderweb]] fan. I began with [[Exile III]] on a Mac LC.

Since, I switched to Avernum and registered the original trilogy + [[BoA]].

I have a lot of scenario projects, but no one ever passed the "actually release anything" barrier ;-) I would particularly like to explore the earlier time of Avernum, that is why I need informations. Thank you Ermariana.net !

Maybe sometime, with enough motivation and dedication, I will actually release something, but I fear it's not likely... Nevertheless, if my modest contributions to this wiki can serve another creator, I will have at last provided something.

The [[Orb of Thralni]] is a legendary artifact that grants its bearer the power of flight. It is extensively used in Avernum 1, 2 and 3.

== Appearance ==

As related by the adventurer who discovered it in the [[Waterfall Warrens]], the item is a bronze sphere chased with silver, about four inches in diameter.

The orb's spell is activated by rubbing it with one's hand. It will act on the bearer and anyone they are in physical contact with, lifting them to a height of about a hundred [[Measures#Length|feet]]. The spell's effect can lift up to around five or six people, depending on their weight, and lasts for about ten minutes. The effect wears off very rapidly, and it is therefore dangerous for non-experienced persons wielding the item, since timing a flight wrong can result in a lethal crash over deadly terrain.

Being an artifact, the orb's enchantment is permanent and apparently inexhaustible.

The Orb's makers are unknown now, but the Orb was first mentioned historically in the account describing the [[First Expedition]]. Its then owner, the adventurer [[Thralni]], had received the orb from the [[Saxton School of Magic]] for the purpose of the expedition. Prior to this, the item had been in the safe-keeping of the school, but knowledge about its past is lost.

Thralni was one of the leaders of the expedition, and he led his group into the [[Waterfall Warrens]] in Central Exile. This maze of currents, rapids and waterfalls continues to be one of the most dangerous areas of the caves, but evidence suggests that Thralni believed he could master the maze by using his orb to carry them to safety if necessary.

Whether by hubris or by inexperience with the orb, he far overestimated its power in terms of the number of people it could lift, the duration of the spell, and the height it could carry the user. Even without the boats that the orb could not have lifted, his group was far too large to fly with the orb, and they split up to explore the maze separately.

In spite of the extreme folly of trusting the orb's limited ability, and the high risk of drowning, Thralni's eventual end ironically was of a different nature. He perished from a fire trap in one of the caverns. The orb was lost.

Similar to [[Demonslayer]] and the other artifacts carried by the first expedition, the orb soon became legendary and, in lack of a distinct origin, received the name of its last bearer, Thralni.

It was found years later by a group of adventurers in the Waterfall Warrens and eventually bequeathed to the [[Tower of Magi]] along with the other First Expedition artefacts.

In 831 [[IE]], during the construction of [[Fort Emergence]] in [[Upper Avernum]], the Orb was granted by the [[Triad]] to the forces overseeing the settling of Upper Avernum and the construction of the fortress. The orb significantly eased the construction and the exploration of the caves, and was eventually stored in a chamber in [[Fort Emergence]] for later use.

=== Theft ===

In 833 [[IE]], shortly after the departure of the [[Reconciliation#The_Second_Party|second party]], the [[Cult of the Sacred Item]] hatched a highly elaborate coup, teleporting into the chamber where it was kept and stealing it under the gaze of its appointed guardian Levy.

The teleportation spell of the cultists, however, was detected and tracked by the skilled [[teleportation]] sorceress [[Seles]], and the orb was reclaimed from the cult by the adventurers of the second party.

It is currently believed to be still in the possession of these adventurers.

Hello,

I'm a long time [[Spiderweb]] fan. I began with [[Exile III]] on a Mac LC.

Since, I switched to Avernum and registered the original trilogy + [[BoA]].

I have a lot of scenario projects, but no one ever passed the "actually release anything" barrier ;-) I would particularly like to explore the earlier time of Avernum, that is why I need informations. Thank you Ermariana.net !

Maybe sometime, with enough motivation and dedication, I will actually release something, but I fear it's not likely... Nevertheless, if my modest contributions to this wiki can serve another creator, I will have provided my little contribution.
