We should better define the scope of this category. We have been putting Mages in here for a while, which is a little questionable. Also, should it include magic-users who are not categorized as mages -- say, Khoth? Also, some magical creatures are here but not others -- nagas but not dragons?!
We still need to figure this out. I'm going to propose that the category be limited to include only topics strongly pertinent to magic itself. Articles that are already in other top-level categories and are only incidentally magical would not be included. My reasoning is that magic is pretty darn widespread in Ermarian, and the category would become pretty useless if we put everything magical in it. A huge chunk of the Bestiary category would go here, most of the Items category, the entire contents of the Mages and Priests category... it's not useful.

This would leave the category containing "core" magical articles such as: Alchemy, Antimagic Field, Blessed athames, Crystal Souls, Crystals, Curses, Dread curses, Familiar, Forcecages, Guardian runes, Liches, Mages, Magic, Magic barriers, Magic in the Empire, Mass teleporter, Mindduels, Null bugs, Onyx scepter, Quickfire, Rakshasi, Redmark College, Schools of Magery, Scrying, Skylark School of Magery, Soruharva, Summoning, Surface Portal, Teleportation, The Five, Tower Colony, Tower of Magi, Triad, Undead
I think we should wait a little bit more to do this until we get the opinions of a few more people. I'm personally torn between what to do. I like the category the way it is, but I also think it's a good idea to "better define the scope of this category." So yeah, wait like a week or two until starting.

Yeah, it's always a good idea to gather consensus before making a change that is organizational (as opposed to factual). That said, my original comment dates from one year ago, so there has been lots of time to comment. Wizboy, how would you define the scope? -- Slarty 06:30, 21 October 2007 (PDT)

A year ago... Ahhh... I see. I mistakened the original comment for this year (the dates are nearly the same). But still, after I thought about this, I believe that we should leave the category as it is for now. When I first came to the Encyclopedia Ermariana, I was interested in the magic of Ermarian. I actually liked how broad the category was because it showed me that there was A LOT of magic in the world of Ermarian. I don't know if this makes sense or not to you, but that's the best that I can explain it.
Okay... Maybe that would be a good idea... But still, there's also the matter of time. Do you or anyone else have the time to do this? Barely anyone edits anything anymore here, so I guess you would be doing this by yourself. I myself am still new to this whole thing, so I won't be much help. Plus, even if I could help, I barely ever go on. And to clarify, by work, I don't just mean removing all the articles that don't belong in this category. I also mean putting all those articles into other categories. Some of the articles in here just belong to this category, so I want to find new categories for them. (I believe all articles should fall into at least one category. <---This could be a newbie belief.) This may be not a lot of work (remember, I'm still new at this), but if it is, then you need time...

And no offense or anything, but does anyone even visit this website anymore? Fine, maybe a few people, but still... I'm just trying to be realistic here.

:In 843 IE, the first version of the Encyclopedia Ermariana was published with the following preface written by one of its founders:

It is, as of the fourth of Suncome this year, ten years after the reconciliation of the Kingdom of Avernum and the Empire of the Surface – under King Micah and Empress Prazac I. Most of our nation have chosen to return to the surface and dwell here, although a great number preferred to stay in the caves; indeed, some citizens of the Empire have by now travelled down themselves, some to live with former family that got separated under the reign of Hawthorne II and Hawthorne III, and some merely for the adventure: The surface has long been purged of most sentient species not human, and many beasts besides, though the Nephilim are returning, and several Slithzerikai tribes are also emigrating to the surface.

Yet, there is quite a large number of former Avernites living in the Southeastern province of Valorim, and its capital, named Dawn by the first settlers in memory of the sunlight they lacked for so long, has grown into a large, prosperous city in these ten years. The Avernites have dwelt in the caves for well over a generation, and as the two cultures, the surface-dwellers and those born in exile, clash, it is becoming increasingly obvious that the intimate knowledge of both the caves and the surface is limited to very few.

It is with this concern in mind that my learned colleagues and I, founders of the Redmark College – named for the late incantatrix who perished in batte against the Vahnatai – in the City of Dawn, have decided to initiate an ambitious project: We shall, in cooperation with the Tower of Magi, the University of Valorim in Lorelei, the Library of Valorim in Sharimik, and with the support of countless travelling sages, begin to compile a compendium, an encyclopedia as it were, containing information on the history, geography, flora, fauna and the magic of all of Ermarian, both the surface and the caves. Under the supervision of the three directors of the Redmark College, the mage Iola Kizante, the historian Dorn Kaytar and the far-travelled explorer Daryl Mycroft – one of the renowned heroes of Avernum – shall be formed a work that will one day be a guide for the citizens of Avernum and the Empire, a tome containing all the basic lore of this world, of the Arcane, the Humanities and the Natural Sciences: The Encyclopedia Ermariana.

----

Dorn Kaytar, Co-founder of Redmark College.
Written on the 26th of Remembrance, 843 Imperial Era, in the City of Dawn, Valorim.

Demonslayer is a famed two-handed sword, its primary function as clear as its name. It was brought down to Exile in the First Expedition, wielded by Karzoth (whose name literally means "Demon-Slayer" in a debased version of Soruharva). When the First Visitation failed, Karzoth was slain by a Haakai, and Demonslayer broke into three parts. The hilt was taken by the Nepharim, the blade by the Dark Slithzerikai, and the tip by the lich Drath to his crypt in the west. After the Kingdom of Avernum was established, the three pieces were eventually found again and reforged. It was used by adventurers to defeat Adze-Haakai and to finally banish the power of Grah-Hoth. It also figured in a prominent role in both the assault on Garzahd during the Empire-Avernum War and the assault on Rentar-Ihrno during the Vahnatai retribution.
Rumors tell of its location being somewhere in the Caves of Illusion, a hidden network of caves, somewhere in northern Valorim.
