During the Second Slith War, Fort Cavalier was all that stood between the invading darkling armies and the Great Cave of the Kingdom of Avernum. The fort was all but destined to fall by the mid of Remembrance of 857 IE, should the garrison not receive either relief infantry as reinforcements or magical aid. The avernite government promptly employed the services of a band of adventurers to provide the latter. The adventurers, later to be known as the Za-Khazi Run Couriers, started their journey at Fort Goodling in the southern end of the Za-Khazi Run at 4th of Remembrance, 857 IE, approximately two weeks prior to the critical point at which Fort Cavalier was projected to not withstand anymore.

The Couriers managed to reach Fort Cavalier in due time, providing the defenders with about a dozen magical wands, which turned the tide of the battle in the lower caves to the avernites' favour. The Couriers managed to return to the Great Cave, and were rewarded by both Fort Cavalier's and Dharmon's representatives for their bravery and heroic actions.
