The Monastery of Madness was located in the southmost of the Remote Isles, off the coast of Karnold Province in Valorim. Built on a particularly inaccessible island, the monastery could only be reached by ferry from Storm Port to Gebra Isle, followed by further boat trips to Remote Isle then More Remote Isle, and finally negotiating a narrow causeway to the Even More Remote Isle where it was situated.

Inhabitants

Around the time of the Plagues, the monastery was home to a religious order colloquially known as the "mad monks". The religion of which the monks were adherents was officially called the "Sacred Tai Kwan Leap Fighting Martial Art Organization".

Tenets

The monks' philosophy - which apparently involved beating themselves, and other people - has some similarities with the Church of Prevailing Righteousness. Their bizarre practices seem to have included: self-deprivation; throwing rocks, spears and anvils; hitting each other on the head with clubs; walking over fire and acid; and practising martial arts. However, the sect was not without learning. The monastery's library contained great knowledge concerning alchemical brews.

Fate

The order of mad monks was finally crushed by the Surface Explorers, who sanctified the altar of madness and brought sanity back to the Remote Isles.
