There is a portal in the ruins of the Tower of Magi that goes to the surface, but there is a rumor that it is not working anymore (more info when I get it). Drakey

The portal at the ToM goes to Upper Avernum and or the surface. Also, there is no year but I have asked about it. And it is approximately 20-30 years after A3, but it's all tentative and ZKR may or may not be canon. -- Drakey 13:25, 3 Sep 2005 (CEST)

The portal is now located in the Great Cave. It was sabotaged slightly and Avernum was cut off from Upper Avernum during the Retribution. You had to rescue 3 mages from Almaria for them to get to the portal to fix it. They decided not to fix it until whoever was causing all the trouble was caught and dealt with.
