Wanted Pages

Aran, I've started going through this list: Special:Wantedpages to find stubs to make, and then I'll go through the list of stubs and expand articles. --Drakey 22:42, 28 Aug 2005 (CEST)

Stubs

Stubs are definitely better than nothing - they let you get down the basics and simple definitions that help people using the Encyclopedia. Drakey

Blocking unregistered edits

Would it be possible to allow only registered users to make edits? I think that would be a good idea. --Drakey

Fort Monastery

Yes, Monastery is new. It looks like it replaced Fort Ganrick (Monastery is west of Fort Draco). --Drakey

Fort Ganrick

Well, it didn't replace Fort Ganrick, but Fort Ganrick no longer exists.

Pages In Progress

You don't need to stub pages marked "In Progress". I specifically didn't stub them because I was planning to finish them. --Drakey

Moving from Geocities

Stuff for you to bring over:

  • The Triad (which needs to be edited)
  • Quickfire
  • Spiders
  • Layout for Herbarium Articles

And then we should be completely done with the old Encyclopedia content (minus wands)

The Triad

The Triad article is full of wrong information and needs to be drastically edited as well, but it does have a lot of words :P

Kelandon's notes

I've spent quite a while going through Kel's excellent notes and making changes to the history of Exile and the founders. Everything should now be aligned with Av 1-3, but I'm holding off on ZKR until I can confirm some A4 stuff. The only contradiction is a history book saying Micah ruled for 40 years before 817, and Erika saying in 833 that he ruled for 20-some years. What Erika said makes absolutely no sense with the other timelines considered, so I just ignored that. -- Drakey 20:09, 31 Aug 2005 (CEST)

Banishing of the Archmagi

The banishing of the Archmagi is early, but it does make sense that it would be in the earlier years of Hawthorne II's reign than the later years. I always thought of Erika as the youngest and most powerful of the Five. I thought of her and Micah as the young leaders of the fledgeling nation. While it does put Micah very old for a non-mage, I've tried to explain it in his entry.

Maps

I don't have the first map, but I assume that you do. If you need it, I should be able to dig it up. Map 2 Map 3

Vantanas

I found this lying around in my sitemouse directory:
http://www.sitemouse.com/users/drakefyre/Vantanas.gif

It wouldn't hurt to upload this so we have another map of Vantanas. And a color one :P -- Drakey 15:08, 2 Sep 2005 (CEST)

Rone

Some of the Rone/Micah information needs to be changed - Rone is not dead, it was a mistaken rumor. But it's confirmed that Rone is using magic to extend his life and probably did for Micah as well.-- Drakey 15:08, 2 Sep 2005 (CEST)

Icarus

Only did it because it seemed to be the same myth, and the Scimitar did mention it. Drakey

Board

If we're going to have it, people should probably check it ;) --Drakey

Featured Articles

Giants? Or Magic? We should get a picture of a giant, though. --Drakey 11:03, 8 September 2006 (CDT)

From where? You're welcome to draw one if you want to... ;-) I'll read both articles today and see if anything could be improved before featuring. Arancaytar | Send Reply! --- That is not dead which can eternal lie... 00:47, 13 September 2006 (CDT)

New Template Heading Colors

Why did you change all of the colors from nice ones to hideous ones? And I mean every single one is ugly now. Was there a problem with the old ones? --Drakey 06:53, 14 September 2006 (CDT)

There's a light on dark skin? I'm still on the old default, I guess. --Drakey 07:31, 14 September 2006 (CDT)
I went over and looked at the new one, but I'm sticking with MonoBook. --Drakey 08:51, 14 September 2006 (CDT)
I agree with Drakey. The new colors are not pretty and the default skin makes the site hard to read. --Slarty 09:39, 14 September 2006 (CDT)
The dark background eliminates the glare on my screen, but I see your point. I've tested (on the City template) the possibility of using the skin-specific stylesheets to make the colors fit the skin that is being used, and it works. I'll do the same for the other templates this weekend, probably. Arancaytar | Send Reply! --- That is not dead which can eternal lie... 04:24, 15 September 2006 (CDT)

What's New?

I might be more active here when I get back home ... it remains to be seen, but I'd like to know if anything interesting happened or a lot of new pages were added/expanded. --Drakey 20:49, 7 June 2007 (PDT)

From Hhhhh

Introduction

I bought a CD containing 100 games that included the exile series, which was when I first played exile. However, every one of those 100 games were unregistered (should I laugh or cry?) and the other games were horrible. Anyways I have not registered in any exile/spiderweb boards so you do not know me. My life is not that interesting, so I will post no more. By the way how do you start a new page?

Stubs

I don't know how to mark articles as a stub, would someone please tell me how?

---Hhhhh

From Noname

Religion

Wait? only 16% of the empire's people follow a religion? That's what the percentages add up to- 16%. I thought that there would be more, so I changed the statistics to add up to 100% of the religious citizenry (not including secular citizens.) My question is, what about the other 84% of the empire? Are they all secular? ---Noname

From Slartucker

Demons

Aran -- your change to demons doesn't make sense to me -- the sentence seems even more confusing now than before. However, I'm not sure if you misinterpreted my version (it WAS a bit confusing) or if you are actually suggesting something different, so I'll wait to hear from you before I change anything. I was trying to say that, despite the bans, most mages end up involved in demon stuff. ---Slartucker 04:49, 12 January 2006 (CST)

P.S. Are rakshasha (however the heck you spell that) demonic? I seem to recall them summoned demons complete with pentagram in the Tiger's Den in Ex2, so I'm doubtful. I'm also skeptical about efreeti, though I suppose that's a matter of interpretation.

Re: Rakshasi

Interesting, I'll have to look into the rakshasi. As for efreeti, I have always assumed that Jeff's efreeti were borrowings from Arabian lore, in which they are the second of five classes of jinn, a magical race that shares some characteristics with Avernum-style demons but are certainly different. At least I've never seen them referred to as demonic anywhere, canonical or not.

Re: Efreeti

Efreet classification: well, they're sentient, and they're as much a race as demons are. I don't think either would be classified as humanoid, though they often have humanoid form. Does everything need a sub-classification beyond the bestiary category, though?
Meanwhile, while researching dragon gender-bending (there's more than I realized) I have discovered yet more flaws in my First Expedition stuff. Sigh. As much as I like my narrative, I think I'm going to have to get rid of it and replace it with a bullet point list of places they visited and things they did. The evidence is just all over the place!

Illithids

Nice way to handle the illithid canonicity. I think I may do something similar for 'normal' versions of rakshasi and efreeti. Fun Fact: Jeff flipped the singular and plural forms of both of those races, from the originals. ---Slartucker 20:43, 19 January 2006 (CST)

FTP site

The site is now timing out whenever I try, not even getting to the point of rejecting my login. I used the one you listed. I've now tried 3 different clients; if the problem is on my end I have no idea what it is. ---Slartucker 11:00, 26 January 2006 (CST)

Re: Canon issues

Mmn. I completely understand the concern about which scenarios should be included. I'm just going to use my best judgment, and if you or Drakey (or anyone else) wants to correct me, you're always welcome to. (Three cheers for the elegant democracy of the wiki!) Alternately, if someone wants to outline -- perhaps as a generally useful OOC article -- exactly what sources are considered legitimate fanon by people who have "been in the community long enough to be considered experts on their subject," I think that would be a very useful thing. (The current fanon entry is devoid of actual information.) --- Slartucker 18:12, 28 January 2006 (CST)

Heh. I actually paused for a moment after typing democracy, but decided it was close enough. --- Slarty

Templates

Aran: is there any way to get the city info template to be an inset (as info boxes are on wikipedia, and as the image thumbnails are here)?

You're kidding, it was that simple? Hah. --- Slartucker 06:59, 2 February 2006 (CST)
It can be a bit tricky to get the formatting you want, but with a few examples like the Emperor template, it's extremely easy. I see you've already made it :) Arancaytar | Send Reply! --- That is not dead which can eternal lie... 07:01, 2 February 2006 (CST)

Misc.

You know, you had me thinking you really were an Ilyaren. :P --- Slartucker 10:20, 3 February 2006 (CST)

Technically, it was atrociously punctuated ;) --- Slartucker 13:18, 5 February 2006 (CST)

Structure

If I understand correctly, right now anything that's an organization requires THREE clicks from the main page to access: one to person, then another to organizations, then another to the entry itself. Perhaps Organizations should just be another top-level category?

Actually, I think this makes sense. At the moment, it is really closer to "Nations" than it is to "Persons" since it includes stuff like the Scimitar, but not groupings of multiple persons like the Triad or the Five. --- Slartucker 10:33, 6 February 2006 (CST)

Structure II

Is there a reason you recat'ed Religion, but not Stories or Languages? I think it's fine, but I'm just curious, since you left Drakey's edits as they were for all three.

Also, somebody is gonna have to recategorize all the individual pages in those categories! --- Slarty 07:32, 25 March 2006 (CST)

Stubs

Undead is still missing Liches entirely, as well as guardians and black shades, which qualifies it as a page that definitely needs work. That one is at least listed on my user page, but in other cases they might not be. There are definitely some articles listed as stubs that don't need to be, but if an entire necessary chunk is missing, shouldn't it still be listed as a stub? --- Slarty 07:33, 5 May 2006 (CDT)

Bots

More bot vandalism. --- Slarty 07:36, 9 June 2007 (PDT)

Apparently, not such a hard time after all! --- Slarty 20:34, 13 June 2007 (PDT)

New Accounts

We're now getting multiple bot attacks per week. While I know you have a backup of the site somewhere, it still worries me that the problem is only likely to get worse and not better. I don't know if there's an easy way to do some kind of craigslist-style humanity verification, but if not, perhaps it would make sense to require that new accounts be OKed by you before they can make edits. I don't want to discourage potential contributors, but the fact that it is now taking your time to undo bot damage every couple of days is relevant, too. -- Slarty 14:14, 7 July 2007 (PDT)

TOC

I posted several talk edits before making the TOC edit, at [[1]], and received your blessing. Structure policy needs to be updated to reflect the changes and not the other way around. The point was that the distinction between major and minor top-level categories was arbitrary, not useful, and did not make sense (Herbarium in major but both Persons (more important to EE) and Cosmology (more important to natural world) in minor). The three "national" categories however are different, since nothing would be just in one of them. The TOC reflects this by having them not in bold. OOC is also not in bold since it's not part of the EE proper.

Structure policy should reflect that every article needs to be in one of the 12 top-level categories (the 11 real ones plus OOC). The "national" categories aren't truly top-level but are listed in the TOC due to their massive size, importance, and utility. --- Slarty 06:55, 17 July 2007 (PDT)

From Jerry (aka Archmage Solberg)

User page format.

Nevermind, I figured it out. I was referring to the lines and headers.

Calling wrong stuff out.

If I think something is wrong, I'll post something in the talk section. If my 'little' change is going to make such a fuss, I'm not gonna let some of this other stuff get by. Jerry, who hates being made a fool of by others.

Upcoming Page Updates.

I'm working on a few things right now, but I would like to help out with updates to many of the pages here. Before I begin work on my contributions, however, I need to more familiarize myself with insight from Avernum's 5 and 6. I've done a few things already here and there (as you could tell from the recent changes page). Arch-Mage Solberg 22:09, 8 September 2010 (PDT)

Just saying hello.

It's been a while. Thank you for keeping this page up. Is there any way we can send donations to help you out? Arch-Mage Solberg (talk) 04:34, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

From Aussieavernum

I am not sure if this is where I should post. You posted on my user page and in that post you asked if I am registered with the Spiderweb Software forums and I can't just say yes or no. I did register at the forums but my e-mail program doesn't work. When I purchased a new computer early in 2005, My e-mail program didn't work. A few weeks ago, my mother called a computer repair company and a man came over and fixed it for 88 australian dollars. The next day it stopped working so I couldn't get the e-mail with the password. RE: RE:Your Message

Thank you for the info about the siganture and e-mail. My mum Jose has created a hotmail account called aussieavernum@hotmail.com and I will soon register in the Spiderweb Forums as aussieavernum.

Yeah, it's Milla. I have a question, would you count wormgrass as a herb?--Milla 19:24, 15 March 2007 (PDT)

Question about editing

Thanks for fixing up that problem I had with the Remembrance entry. What exactly did you do because I've been pulling out my hair in frustration at trying to get rid of the dotted line. --Milla 15:34, 20 November 2007 (PST)

Olly's Page

http://encyclopedia.ermarian.net/wiki/Olly_canon it's blue but the link doesn't exist. What is the problem? I'm trying to fill out the sources template.

RE: Kirlin

Sorry, didn't know there was something like this going on, just looked like an empty page to me. (Yeah, quite odd, and sadly I always got problems with finding the right discussions, except there's a direct link nearby)

Well, do with the edit what you want, I just hope a bit of it helped... ~ Crynsos 10:16, 16 July 2007 (PDT)

Thanks.

I'll look into that. And thanks for the welcome.--Milla 05:25, 25 April 2012 (PDT)

Uploading files and image thumbnails

So uploading files does not appear to be working. I attempted to upload a copy of the Vahnatai lands map from A2:CS but I get the following messages; "Warning: fopen(/var/www/encyclopedia.ermarian.net/w/images/lockdir/8ewtjw1moaq1haq30ov1z4qdc3zkfk7.lock): failed to open stream: Permission denied in /var/www/encyclopedia.ermarian.net/w/includes/filebackend/lockmanager/FSLockManager.php on line 125" and "[7dc43834] 2015-01-22 04:36:46: Fatal exception of type MWException".

Also the image thumbnails for some of the uploaded files seem to be borked, for example the map of Pralgad on the Swamps of Dralgath page.
