Broken Fang Clan was a troglodyte tribe living on the shores of Za-Khazi. The tribe was cunning, strong and relatively sophisticated by the usual standards. The clan was exterminated by the Za-Khazi Run Couriers, a band of adventurers on their way to bring supplies to Fort Cavalier during the Second Slith War.

Organisation

The clan was led by a chieftain, supported by a cadre of shamans and elite warriors. It can be presumed that the clan chieftain was more cunning than usual; the river fortress was strategically located and easily defensible. In addition the fortress boasted a spine beast ranch, a bazaar and an alchemical laboratory.

It was also reported by the Za-Khazi Run Couriers that the Broken Fang Clan chieftain had tucked away plans, contracts and mandates which proved that the clan had engaged in co-belligerent relations with the darkling slith armies engaged in the Second Slith War. In other words, the darklings had bought conducts of safe passage from the troglodytes to get through Za-Khazi Run easily, on the grounds of their shared hatred for humanity. There were implications that the co-operation between the troglodytes and darklings might have deepened given more time, but fortunately for the defenders of Fort Cavalier, and furthermore the Kingdom of Avernum, this alliance never got off the ground.

Ideology

The Broken Fang Clan was led by a strong hatred of humanity, and (like all troglodytes) a fanatical hatred for giants. The tribe fled from the Surface, fleeing the Empire's exterminations, which all but inflamed their view of humanity to a fever pitch. During their active years within the Za-Khazi Run, the troglodytes turned their fortress to a meeting point and a trading post for all who viewed humanity as an enemy. Coincidentally, this included darkling war parties.

Concerning alliances and other ideological practices, the clan was not averse to employing undead. The innermost treasury was defended by four spectres. This, in conjunction with their capability and will to go through the pain of subsuming spine beasts to their arsenal, shows that the clan was quite pragmatic, vicious and, above all, cunning in their world view.

Religion

Like most troglodyte clans or burrows, the Broken Fang Clan made extensive use of a dark altar dedicated to grim entities and powers to enhance their warriors' combat prowess. While the altar nor the higher powers the troglodytes worshipped might not have been demonic per se, the altar reportedly retaliated by summoning three demons after it was consecrated by a holy rite.

Relations

Listed by affiliation:

Kingdom of Avernum

  • Passively hostile: while actual battles never occurred between the two nation-states' armies, the troglodyte clan actively pursued avenues that harmed, or would have harmed, the Kingdom of Avernum. (Za-Khazi Run Couriers, while employed by the Kingdom of Avernum, are not counted as an army for the sake of accuracy.)

Darkling slithzerikai

  • Co-belligerent: both parties were united by a common enemy (the Kingdom of Avernum), thus consummating the old adage 'The enemy of my enemy is my friend'.

Za-Khazi Run Couriers

  • Actively hostile (during 857 IE) / cause of the clan's extinction: the Couriers infiltrated the clan fortress and neutralized the opposition on the grounds of proceeding with their task to provide relief supplies to Fort Cavalier.
