Fort Remote blocks the passage between the Great Cave and the Unsettled Lands west of it. The fort was built before it was discovered that few hostile creatures lived in the western lands. It was the subject of many jokes, until it was savagely destroyed by the demon prince Grah-Hoth, then captive in Skarragath, as revenge against the Kingdom of Avernum. The fort was rebuilt, and became an important bulwark against the Empire mage-fort, Kothtar, during the Empire-Avernum War; and later against the Basalt Fortress of Rentar-Ihrno.
